Under general supervision of the dentist, is responsible for providing oral hygiene service and education to adult and pediatric patients. This position will work in close physical proximity with patients and some of the primary responsibilities include removing plaque from and polishing a patient's teeth during routine checkups, screening patients, reviewing a patient's oral health history and teaching appropriate brushing and flossing techniques. Other functions allowable in NYS as defined in the dental practice act that may be delegated by a licensed dentist in accordance with regulations promulgated by the NYS health commissioner (example: local infiltration anesthesia following completion of accredited/approved continuing education). Provides patient education, oral hygiene instruction, tobacco cessation and nutritional counseling to patients stressing the relevance of oral health to overall health. Provides HeadStart and ABCD visual oral health screenings.
