Role Summary: The Director, Direct Taxes, sets the long-term direct tax strategy and oversees the company’s direct tax compliance, state and federal audits, cash performance and the accounting for income taxes and related financial reporting at Alaska Air Group (AAG). As a people leader, this role establishes strategic goals and direction for a team of tax professionals to maintain accurate direct tax records, and to ensure timely preparation and filing of tax returns and SEC reporting. Key Duties: Establish long-term strategic goals and direction for the direct tax team.Develop people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on fostering strategic and systems thinking, development of talent, and succession planning across teams and disciplines.Shape culture of the team through action, presence, and reinforcement of behaviors. Influences in Tax strategies and provides strategic recommendations to the VP of Tax and other leaders.Oversee the completion of direct tax projects, including analysis of proposed projects, contracts and initiatives for tax impact, analysis of accounting treatment of transactions and related tax treatment.Review of federal and state income tax filings to ensure accurate and timely reporting and payments, ensuring proper documentation of files to ensure that all issues have been researched and documented for audit purposes.Review of financial accounting and reporting of taxes to ensure proper documentation and compliance with GAAP, upkeep of SOX documentation, and oversight of maintenance of controls for assigned areas.Lead team and establish priorities of tax professionals to deliver on business objectives.Partner with other leaders to ensure the workloads of the team are balanced and each team member is both challenged and supported.Establish and implement opportunities for process improvements in company tax procedures, including technology enhancements.Direct the team in preparation of new routes, including international destinations.Lead efforts with taxing authorities to support and maintain our filings.Consult on payroll issues, including travel privileges, state withholding and other payroll issues.Manage a wide variety of projects simultaneously, including managing outside service providers.Oversee and provide input on forecasting models (EPS, cash, etc).
