Best Friends Animal Society is the only national animal welfare organization focused exclusively on ending the killing of dogs and cats in America's shelters. An authority and leader in the no-kill movement since its founding in 1984, Best Friends runs the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals, as well as life-saving programs in partnership with rescue groups and shelters across the country. Since its founding, Best Friends has helped reduce the number of animals killed in shelters from 17 million per year to 1.5 million. This is a volunteer, unpaid position.
The Volunteer Firefighter protects the community in a wide range of emergency situations. The Volunteer Firefighter may be called upon to deliver fire suppression, emergency medical assistance, rescue, hazardous material responses, public education and other various duties as assigned.
Example of Duties/Essential Functions: Responds to fire alarms and extinguishes fire Responds to calls for medical assists Responds to and renders assistance in emergency cases; Cleans and inspects equipment and apparatus after returning from a fire; Inspects equipment and apparatus and notifies chain of command of any defects; Makes minor repairs to equipment and apparatus, performs routine preventative maintenance tasks, and keeps records of such action; Keeps fire station, equipment and grounds in a clean and orderly condition; Participates in training activities and instruction sessions; Acquires and retains a thorough knowledge of the City, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items; Performs various public information or education tasks; Enters inspection, training and (on occasion) and fire calls into the records management system Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City and Department policies and procedures; Works with other City departments on a daily basis  Other Duties and Responsibilities: May respond to emergency calls for specialized service such as hazardous materials, confined spaces rescue, extrication and technical rescues that include high angle, below grade, swift water, trench and collapse rescues; May respond to non-emergency calls providing a wide rang of public service activities May be assigned other duties by Fire Administration Staff

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer. We are always looking for dedicated volunteers! Below are some things to consider prior to starting this process.
Age requirements: 18 and up or 16-17 if parent signs the liability waiver. A trained volunteer can bring their child who has watched the learning modules and sign liability waivers. Understand that most activities have a minimum age requirements of 16 and up ( ie. dog walking) and the child must be supervised at all times. Noticeably children under 16  typically lose interest due to the experience not being what they anticipated. (ie. we don't have a puppy or kitten room)
If your interest is dog walking, be aware that most dogs that are in the shelter are medium to x-large in size with pent up energy. It does require strength, balance and stamina to walk them out to the play yards. They tend to pull on leash and combined with their size is why many new volunteers come once or twice and don't return.
If your interest is in cats, in general, around November through May we have very few cats which means less volunteer opportunities. Late spring, summer, and early fall is "kitten season". Our feline intakes increase and so does our need for extra help.

HHS Wildlife Center is now accepting volunteers!
We rely greatly on our volunteers for the daily operations of the organization. Join us for a Volunteer Interest and Orientation Meeting to learn more about our organization and how you can get involved. There are two main areas in which you can volunteer, the Center and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Department: The Center is where Critter Care works with our Animal The Wildlife Rehabilitation Department is where we house admitted wildlife for onsite rehabilitation.
Volunteer Requirements: Volunteers must be 18 years or older** Commit to one 4-hour shift per week. Volunteers pay a yearly $40 registration fee which covers your HHS Wildlife Center T-shirt, hands-on training with experienced staff, as well as help cover the high cost of caring for the animals every day. New volunteers are required to attend an orientation that covers all aspects of volunteering with HHS Wildlife Center.

Qualifications: Appreciation of all wild animals. A clear understanding of HHS Wildlife Center's mission Ability to follow instructions and willingness to assist wherever needed.  All volunteers will be expected to clean cages, wash dishes, complete laundry, clean floors, etc. Patience and ability to communicate and work with others. Physical ability to spend 4 hours standing, walking, bending, twisting, and lifting. Reliable and punctual.
Disclaimers: Critter Care and On-Site Wildlife Rehabilitation Volunteers must be able to handle both live and dead insects. Carcass feeding - feeding portions or whole (dead) prey - is one of the ways we enrich animals' lives to support their physical, mental, and social health and to stimulate natural behaviors in the wild. Some animals in Critter Care and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Department receive whole prey in their diets. Tetanus shot is recommended for all Wildlife Rehabilitation and Critter Care volunteers. Please know that peanuts and other tree nuts are used in the diets of our animals and those with allergies may be frequently exposed. We are not currently providing hours for court-ordered community service.
