Gulf Coast Alloy Welding imageThe Materials Manager at Gulf Coast Alloy Welding (GCAW) is responsible for ensuring that all materials, components, and sub-services are procured, expedited, and available on time for fabrication projects. This role requires strong drawing interpretation skills to determine material requirements based on fabrication drawings and project specifications.
The Materials Manager will oversee material inquiries, procurement coordination, expediting, and scheduling while working closely with buyers, project managers, and vendors to meet project deadlines. Additionally, they will verify that all materials comply with ASME standards and project requirements.
Key Responsibilities: 1. Drawing Interpretation & Material Identification: Review fabrication drawings and determine the required materials, insulation, internals, and coatings. Work with engineering and project teams to clarify material specifications and resolve discrepancies. Ensure materials align with ASME code requirements, client specifications, and fabrication processes. Verify that bills of materials (BOMs) are accurate and reflect actual project needs.
2. Procurement & Material Planning: Establish Order-By Dates to ensure materials are procured on schedule. Initiate and manage material inquiries and send them to the Buyer for processing. Ensure that all required materials (including internals, insulation, L&P’s, vessel/tanks, and other sub-services) are secured before the fabrication start date. Verify material specifications and grades for ASME code compliance.
3. Vendor Coordination & Expediting: Track open purchase orders and expedite materials as needed to meet deadlines. Develop and maintain relationships with vendors to ensure timely deliveries and favorable terms. Coordinate with suppliers for material certifications, quality documentation, and compliance with ASME standards. Troubleshoot and resolve delays, shortages, or quality issues with vendors and suppliers.
4. Inventory & Scheduling: Monitor on-site inventory levels and ensure stock aligns with project needs. Work closely with Project Managers (PMs) to update and maintain project material schedules. Ensure material deliveries align with the Start of Fabrication (S.O.F.) date. Adjust schedules based on fabrication delays, vendor delays, or changes in project scope.
5. Compliance & Documentation: Ensure material traceability and maintain proper documentation for ASME compliance. Verify Mill Test Reports (MTRs), heat numbers, and other material certifications. Work with QA/QC teams to confirm material integrity and adherence to project requirements. Maintain accurate records of purchases, deliveries, and supplier communications.

Qualifications: 3-5 years of experience in materials management, procurement, or supply chain in a fabrication, welding, or manufacturing environment. Strong ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and bills of materials (BOMs). Knowledge of material grades and industry standards.
