The Emergency Department at Hartford Hospital, a tertiary care teaching hospital, is recognized as being one of the busiest EDs in the region. HHED is also an accredited Level 1 Trauma Center, Comprehensive Cardiac Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and accredited Geriatric ED. Additionally, HHED is a proud recipient of the Emergency Nurses Association’s 2024 Lantern Award for demonstrating excellence in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research performance. The Lantern Award is a visible symbol of an emergency department’s commitment to quality, safety, a healthy work environment and innovation in nursing practice and emergency care. Comprised of 108 beds, with the addition of a new 19 bed ED Observation Unit, HHED treats an average of 110,000 patients annually. Functioning within the framework for professional nursing practice, the Nurse Manager oversees daily operations of the Emergency Department. The Nurse Manager supervises and effectively communicates with all direct report staff, managing staff hiring, accountability and development, and contributing to both staff and department performance improvement initiatives to meet the hospital’s strategic goals. The Nurse Manager has 24-hour accountability for managing resources (human, material and financial), to ensure quality, cost-effective delivery of patient services for specific patient populations, in a defined area across the continuum. This is accomplished by direct action, delegation, coaching and support of unit-based shared governance councils. Role reports to Emergency Services Senior Clinical Operations Manager. Qualifications • Current Connecticut Registered Nurse license required• Bachelor's degree required.* Master's degree preferred. One degree must be in Nursing• Certification in nursing administration is preferred within 5 years of assuming position• Minimum 3 years relevant clinical experience• Experience leading employees in an emergency care setting, demonstrating progressive leadership skills• BLS required• ACLS, PALS, TNCC and CEN preferred• Strong communications skills required - both written, verbal and public speaking/teaching *Exceptions to the educational requirement will be evaluated on an individual basis. For example, a strong candidate in the process of completing the educational requirement will be considered. Continued progress toward completion of the educational requirement within five years will be required. Nurses on Center 10 care primarily for patients diagnosed with Arrhythmia disorders and Congestive Heart Failure. Other patients cared for on Center 10 include patients who are pre- operative open Heart Surgery; and other Cardiac patients requiring monitoring. The pace is professionally challenging and stimulating and a wonderful learning environment. The assistant nurse manager supervises a work group to ensure that a high quality, cost-effective product or service is delivered in support of the hospital's strategic plan, and the function's goals and objectives. They model the effective, efficient operation of the unit by scheduling and assigning work, resolving processing problems, collecting data to monitor progress, and carrying an assigned workload or filling in as necessary. While continually strives to improve quality and productivity by identifying improvement opportunities, andrecommending and implementing changes. They will implements and monitors departmental goals and objectives for the work group that align with the strategic direction of the organization, by analyzing needs and developing recommendations. The assistant nurse manager will implements individual performance expectations; coaches, develops, and provides input to performance evaluations to enable employees to be successful in contributing to the achievement of individual and work group objectives. When hospitals cannot provide the advanced care, expertise and new treatment options their patients require, they turn to us The Neuro-Surgical ICU is a 17 bed adult inpatient unit caring for critically ill Neuro-science and Neuro-surgical patients. Our patient population consists of stroke, head and spinal cord trauma and brain hemorrhage. These patients require nurses who specialize in monitoring intracranial pressures, brain tissue oxygenation and hemo-dynamic monitoring. RN’s in this specialty also must have a family-centered approach because of the critical nature of our patients. We also work closely with our Neuro-intensivist, Physician Assistants and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses to provide the highest quality of care for our patients. Job Summary The Assistant Nursing Manager is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has responsibility for the supervision of patient care, clinical personnel, and unit operations. This position supervises a work group to ensure that a high quality, cost-effective patient and family centered care is provided in support of the hospital's strategic plan, and the function's goals and objectives. This position works collaboratively with functional leadership and is responsible for the oversight of daily operations of the assigned department including off shift and weekend supervision of nursing and non-licensed staff. This position manages resources, quality improvement, payroll, creating and maintaining colleague schedules and monitors patient throughput to facilitate efficient clinical operations. In addition, this position is responsible for a safe and therapeutic unit environment, which includes working in the department as staff RN to assist as needed. This position supports leadership in ensuring standards of excellence and professional development are fostered and met. This position also participates in and may lead Performance Improvement work in their assigned department. Qualifications Current Connecticut RN License.Graduate of an accredited nursing school (BSN Required; MSN Preferred).BLS certification by the American Heart Association, ACLS certification, and proof of Arrhythmia Certification required prior to date of hire.Minimum 2 years of Acute Care RN experience required, with 1 year of supervisory experience preferred.
