We are looking for a skilled Asphalt Raker to join our paving crew for heavy highway civil construction projects in the Houston, Texas area. The Asphalt Raker is responsible for spreading, leveling, and smoothing hot mix asphalt on roadways, parking lots, and other surfaces using hand tools. This role is essential to ensuring a high-quality, uniform finish for all paved surfaces.
Job Duties Include:
- Rake and level hot mix asphalt to achieve proper grade and smoothness.
- Assist with luting, shoveling, and general placement of asphalt materials.
- Work alongside the paving machine and roller to ensure consistent surface quality.
- Maintain tools and ensure work area is clean and safe.
- Communicate effectively with the paving foreman and other crew members.
- Follow safety guidelines and wear required PPE at all times.
- Assist with other tasks related to paving and site preparation as needed.
- Perform other administrative and operational duties as assigned.
Hourly rate of pay is $20 - $22+ depending on experience.

Requirements:
- Minimum 1 year of experience in asphalt paving or a related role.
- Familiarity with hand tools used in asphalt work (lutes, rakes, shovels, etc.).
- Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience on TXDOT or municipal paving projects.
- Knowledge of asphalt compaction and surface tolerances.
- OSHA 10 certification.
- Ability to operate small paving-related equipment (plate compactor, roller, etc.).
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
- This position involves performing physically demanding work on paving crews to spread, level, and smooth asphalt on roadways, parking lots, and other surfaces. Asphalt Rakers use hand tools such as rakes and lutes to ensure a consistent surface finish and proper grade, working in close coordination with the paving machine and roller operators.
- The role requires frequent and prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching , often on hot pavement and in high-temperature conditions. Asphalt Rakers must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull tools and materials weighing up to 100 pounds. Tasks demand manual dexterity, physical strength, and good hand-eye coordination for effective asphalt placement and manipulation.
- Work is performed outdoors in extreme heat, humidity, sun exposure, and around high-temperature asphalt. The work environment includes loud noise, vibrations, dust, fumes, and moving equipment. Surfaces may be uneven or slippery, and the role requires constant situational awareness for safety.
- Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) —including gloves, long sleeves, high-visibility vests, safety glasses, hard hats, and safety-toed boots—is required. The position demands physical stamina, focus, and a strong safety mindset , especially when working in fast-paced, high-traffic construction zones.
