Purpose
Support the new Abdominal Wall reconstruction and General Surgery clinic at UT Health Austin. This role combines direct patient care in the OR, clinic, and inpatient settings with a focus on collaborative, evidence-based management of abdominal wall and complex hernia conditions as well as traditional general surgery.
Responsibilities
- Provide care for patients with abdominal wall conditions, including inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, ventral hernia, incisional hernia, and complex abdominal wall reconstruction cases, as well as bread and butter general surgery. Settings will be OR, inpatient, and clinic.
- First assist in OR
- Collaborate with attending surgeons and the multidisciplinary care team to ensure accurate diagnosis, appropriate surgical planning, and continuity of care.
- Conduct preoperative and postoperative patient evaluations, including history-taking, physical exams, imaging and study review, and patient counseling.
- Independently manage follow-up visits, monitor wound healing, and address postoperative concerns in consultation with supervising physicians.
- Educate patients on surgical options, perioperative expectations, rehabilitation, and long-term preventive measures to reduce recurrence.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, contribute to clinical protocols, and develop patient education materials specific to abdominal wall surgery.
- Document care in the electronic medical record, coordinate preoperative clearances, and assist with surgical scheduling processes.
- Support education of medical students, residents, and fellows through clinical teaching and case review.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Licensed and certified Physician Assistant in the state of Texas, in good standing.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing or physician assistant program; Bachelor's degree required.
- Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Commitment to patient-centered care and continuous quality improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with value-based care models and multidisciplinary surgical care coordination.
- Experience with EPIC HER, Athena EMR and management of surgical patients in outpatient settings.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Salary Range
$120,000+ depending on qualifications
