Job Overview:
RWJBH is seeking a Coordinator in the Morris Cancer Center Operating Room at the New Brunswick Campus.
The Perioperative Coordinator plays a key role in ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the Operating Room (OR). This position is responsible for overseeing the daily OR schedule, coordinating assignments for nursing staff, anesthesia, surgical residents, and RNFAs, and ensuring that cases start and progress as planned.
Acting as a central point of communication, the Perioperative Coordinator facilitates schedule adjustments in response to delays, promptly notifies appropriate personnel of changes, and ensures all stakeholders remain informed, including surgeons, residents, and perioperative leadership. The role requires a strong understanding of surgical policies, privileges, and hospital procedures, as well as the ability to manage staff scheduling and payroll functions. With excellent communication and organizational skills, the Perioperative Coordinator ensures seamless collaboration across clinical and administrative teams, supporting the delivery of high-quality surgical care in a fast-paced environment.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- Two (2) plus years of experience in a similar capacity in a healthcare setting
- Effective Communication Skills
- Knowledge of EMR Systems
Preferred:
- Previous Operating Room knowledge helpful
- Prior experience as a Coordinator
Scheduling Requirements:
- Working Shift: Monday-Friday
- Day Shift, 6:00AM-2:30PM
- Full-Time, 40 Hours Per Week
Essential Functions:
- Oversees the flow of the Operating Room daily schedule ensuring cases are starting as scheduled and progressing as planned
- Coordinates nursing staff, anesthesia, surgical residents and RNFA assignments
- Facilitates the moving of cases as delays occur and classed cases are booked
- Notifies appropriate personnel when classed cases are booked
- Confirms patients name and hospital room numbers
- Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures regarding surgical privileges
- Notifies the attending surgeons and the surgical residents of OR schedule time changes, in a timely manner
- Communicates all relevant information regarding the OR schedule to the VP, Perioperative Services, AOD, SOD, SDS Director, and the SLM/ OR Charge Nurse assigned to the OR Desk
- Communicates any anticipated delays immediately to the AOD and Operations Manager
- Answers telephones and beepers, screens/transfers necessary calls, and communicates messages and information accurately to appropriate personnel
- Utilize communication etiquette when interfacing with the other personnel, visitors, physicians, etc
- Able to communicate clearly and effectively at all times
- Manages staff schedule and payroll
