POSITION SUMMARY:

The IV/PICC Nurse is a Registered Nurse who assumes responsibility and accountability for assessing patients individualized IV access needs, developing a specific plan related to IV Therapy needs and implementing and evaluating an individualized plan for each patient.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for the insertion of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC)
  • Provide maintenance and follow-up care for PICC lines and central lines
  • Serve as a preceptor for RN's who have successfully completed a training course for the insertion of PICC Lines
  • Initiates training and education for nursing staff, patient/family as required
  • Performs assessment skills
  • Plans nursing care
  • Intervenes with appropriate action after needs are identified
  • Evaluates the assessment, planning and intervention process
  • Demonstrates professional and personal development
  • Deliver direct patient care appropriate to age of patient served including adult and geriatric patients
  • Provides specialized knowledge, assessment, and skills in clinical setting in regard to obtaining vascular access, maintaining vascular access and troubleshooting vascular access devices
  • Performs the appropriate application of the device algorithm
  • Performs ultrasound guided peripheral IV starts
  • Administers Cath Flow for obstructed lines, per physician order

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Education:
Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma Program

Experience:

2 years clinical nursing experience - Required

Vascular Access experience - Highly Preferred

Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) is required through American Heart Association (AHA) by the completion of hospital orientation

Licenses: State of Kentucky or Multi-State Registered Nurse License-Required

*New Graduates may work under a KY provisional license for up to 6 months with the expectation that an RN license will be obtained within the first 6 months of employment. If an RN license is not earned within 6 months of employment, the provisional licensee must immediately cease practicing in a licensed nursing position.

Skills and Abilities:
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
