Role Synopsis
We are hiring for a Houston-based individual contributor Reservoir Quality (RQ) position within the global Reservoir Quality-Biostratigraphy Specialist Team. The team provides deep technical expertise that is applied globally across bp’s Exploration and Reservoir Development portfolio.
This role aims to strengthen the RQ discipline & capability within the Subsurface Team through technical project delivery, coaching junior staff, internal course/seminar delivery, and innovation. The individual will deliver RQ projects from start to finish for Access, Exploration/Appraisal and Reservoir Development activities from our worldwide portfolio. This includes providing advice on analytical data collection, Q/C of vendor data, compiling relevant data from various sources into a relational database, interpret and integrate geological data in order to reveal processes controlling RQ on a local and regional scale, and develop forward models for rock property prediction. The individual will collaborate across teams, particularly sedimentology, basin modeling, petrophysics, and reservoir engineering, to provide quantitative insights into reservoir deliverability within a framework of risk and uncertainty description. This role is best suited for experienced reservoir quality geologist with a history of business delivery.
Key Accountabilities
- Primary accountability would be advising region teams to design fit-for-purpose reservoir quality (RQ) projects with the data that is available, and deliver high quality RQ work products
- Assist in generating and prioritizing technical service work
- Work not only closely with other RQ and sedimentology/stratigraphy (sed/strat) experts but also across teams to provide an integrated view of the opportunity under assessment, and aid Exploration and Reservoir Development decisions
- Provide input into management presentations and reports.
- Work closely with colleagues in Exploration, Reservoir Development, and/or third-party contractors to ensure quality of relevant core analytical programs, data and interpretative reports
- Work with technical leads to ensure knowledge transfer through contributions to internal seminars and publications
- Work with RQ, sed/strat, petroleum systems, petrophysics, reservoir engineering, and structural colleagues to design and deliver appropriate formal and informal training/coaching
- Attend formal and informal peer reviews, providing feedback and assurance
- Coach and mentor junior staff to increase the overall capability of asset geoscientists
- Keep involved and support the appropriate Communities of Practice and Networks (e.g., sed/strat)
- Keep aware of external advances in RQ through attendance of relevant conferences and/or RQ-related consortium meetings (e.g. Geocosm RQC, BASIC)
- Develop towards recognition as a bp subject matter expert, and where appropriate, publish high quality innovative technical work internally and externally e.g. at industry-wide conferences and formal manuscript publications
- When appropriate, develop and or test new software, internal and external.
Education: MSc Geology degree; preferably PhD level.
Essential experience and job requirements:
- Analytical skills in sandstone petrology and diagenesis, including petrological thin-section analysis, XRD, SEM, and fluid inclusion and isotope data applications to diagenesis
- A good understanding of, and ability to integrate with, other subsurface subject areas (Petrophysics, Geophysics, Reservoir Engineering).
- Reservoir quality (RQ) technical excellence (minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience is desired)
- Proficiency in RQ prediction using Touchstone and Tmap software (Geocosm) is desired
- An ability to scope and coordinate RQ projects (occasionally involving external contractors), to deliver high-quality products and technical guidance of individuals and teams (good mentoring skills)
- Ability to develop standard methodology, products and improve analysis tools and workflows
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal). Experienced with presenting to senior management to influence both vertically and horizontally in the organization
- Ability to context switch while supporting more than one team at pace with the ability to pragmatically right-scope products
- Experience in more than one of the following: reservoir management, exploration, appraisal, and/or early field development
- Be collaborative and work closely with project teams and technical experts locally or in remote offices
- Bias for action – proactive and engages before being asked or forced
- Good business sense, with ability to deliver quality technical work within project timelines and budgets and balance multiple projects concurrently. Must have the flexibility to rapidly adapt to new project groups and technical areas

Desirable Criteria
- Working knowledge of the major elements of sediment depositional systems, Basin Modeling, Petrophysical analysis, and core data acquisition programs
