Job summary: The Outpatient Transfusion RN has multiple roles and functions including caregiver, decision-maker, patient advocate, manager, rehabilitator, comforter, communicator, and teacher. The RN will provide and coordinate Transfusion activities to assure safe, compassionate patient care. It is the responsibility of the RN to safely administer blood transfusions, intravenous fluids, and other medications as ordered by the patient’s provider. The RN is expected to provide an initial assessment of the patient condition and initiate interventions as required. The RN is also expected to monitor patients throughout treatment and to quickly and accurately identify changes in condition, responding appropriately to these for patient safety. The RN is expected to communicate changes in patient condition to the provider in a timely manner throughout treatment and activate emergency response protocols as needed. The RN is expected to provide complete documentation of the patient’s course of treatment.

At all times, the RN will work to enhance patient outcomes, increase satisfaction, and reduce cost of care. The RN is accountable to all applicable nurse practice acts, state and federal laws, and all relevant accreditation standards. The RN will be expected to maintain all required licenses and certifications throughout employment. The RN will similarly be expected to adhere to all facility policies and procedures.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Administers intravenous fluids, blood products, and other medications safely via peripheral and central catheters and ports
  • Identifies, assesses, and responds to problems through patient assessment and intervention. Evaluates actual or potential health problems
  • Develops and participates in educating patients and their support persons about post-discharge care and expectations
  • Initiates patient care meetings with the health care team to revise the patient’s plan of care on an ongoing basis as their condition warrants.

Qualifications

  • Active and unencumbered Nevada RN license (BSN degree preferred)
  • Minimum 1 year minimum Infusion or Transfusion room nursing experience
  • Active Basic Life Support Certification required
  • Chemotherapy and Biotherapy provider card required within 6 months of hire
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) strongly preferred
  • Active Acute Care Life Support Certification preferred
