The Cardiac Device Nurse demonstrates extensive knowledge of cardiac nursing, cardiac electrophysiology, biomedical engineering and concepts to assess the technical function of the CIED, perform testing, and advanced programming of the CIED, analyze and interpret device and patient diagnostics, and perform accurate clinical documentation as determined by departmental and best practice standards in collaboration with Electrophysiology Providers MDs/APRNs/PAs.
Essential Functions:
·Promotes excellence in the care of patients with CIED and cardiac rhythm or heart failure orders. Demonstrates advanced, autonomous direct cardiac rhythm management care for patients with CIEDs by integrating extensive knowledge from physiology, pathophysiology, and the basics of electronics to perform advanced device interrogations, diagnostic reviews, and overall analysis of device function for in-person evaluations and remote monitoring.
·Expertly performs post-operative CIED patient assessment and teaching regarding incision care, cardiac device function, Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Shock Protocol and remote CIED monitoring.
·Utilizes critical thinking skills and advanced knowledge of electrophysiology concepts to safety, expertly and autonomously program device parameters to optimize system function
·Performs advanced troubleshooting for complex device issues, ensures patient safety, promotes appropriate pacing, optimizes rate modulation, battery longevity, and device timing cycles, evaluates appropriateness of ICD therapy and Anti tachycardia pacing (ATP) programming, and supports the electrophysiological needs of the patient.
·Expertly recognizes abnormal functions of pacemakers, ICDs, and implantable loop recorder devices (ILRs), and Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT)devices through in-person evaluations and remote monitoring. Employs complex strategies to address and correct issues. Maintains comprehensive knowledge of intricate device features intended to mimic intrinsic physiology and improve quality-of-life.
