You put the pro in leadership and oversight of daily workflow, quality control and staff performance in the Accessioning Department to ensure the highest quality patient care. Will accurately receive, sort and accession specimens sent to GPA for preparation and diagnosis. Accountable for all technical, personnel, quality control and administrative functions in order to produce timely, high quality specimen receiving, accession data entry, test ordering, and distribution of workload to other laboratory departments.

- Directs the activities of the department staff to ensure efficiency by optimizing accessioning workflow to expeditiously deliver specimens to other departments while maintaining critical focus on quality.
- Receives and processes derm, surgical, cytology and clinical specimens from referring physicians, ensuring accurate specimen identification and documentation on all logs. Duties consist of but are not limited to the following:
- Receives and accounts for all specimens
- Documents receipt of specimens utilizing standard format and notations
- Sort specimens by specimen type
- Ensures requisitions are completed correctly/completely
- Accurately performs data entry of all patient and site information
- Identifies cytology correlation and rush cases where necessary
- Assigns special stains when certain rule-outs require them
- Label bottles and requisitions
- Labels PC (Professional Component) cases for which paraffin blocks and/or slides are received
- Ensures proper special handling of samples such as those requiring Immunofluorescence (DIF staining) and clinical samples which can be temperature or time sensitive.
- Follows all protocols of quality and accuracy, as well as precise documentation in WindoPath.
- Provides the highest level of customer service to clients and internal departments by ensuring efficiency and quality in turnaround time, problem resolution and education related to services offered.
- Monitors existing departmental procedures and policies for efficiency and accuracy of the laboratory operations.
- Promotes efficiency by optimizing workflow of accessioned specimens to the downstream laboratory while maintaining critical focus on quality.
- Maintains an established system of checks and balances throughout the process to ensure accurate accessioning of the samples.
- Keeps working areas clean and organized for safe, accurate and efficient department operations.
- Monitors supply levels for cost efficient functioning without processing delays.
- Supports the performance of other laboratory functions/tasks as needed to enhance the throughput and operational efficiency.
- Provides support functions in other laboratory areas, as needed, when assigned by supervisor.
- Adheres to all confidentiality mandates, including maintaining security and confidentiality of all data, procedures and data system components.
- Maintains strictest confidentiality.
- Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.
- Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience
- 2+ years previous supervisory experience preferred. Prior laboratory experience required
- Successful completion of a pre-employment computerized data entry test and basic skills test.
- Successful completion of an Online Medical Terminology Program upon commencement of employment.
- Computers, computer programs, information system(s), photocopiers, scanners, facsimile machines, voice mail systems and telephones.

Environmental Working Conditions:
Laboratory work environment with exposure to various chemicals and equipment. Prolonged sitting, frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds. Safety equipment and personal protective equipment provided and required. Requires normal range of hearing and manual dexterity sufficient to operate office and laboratory equipment.

The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger; handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to focus. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.
