Job Description:
The first assistant in a surgical operation is a trained individual who actively assists the surgeon in completing the operation safely and efficiently. Responsibilities include providing exposure, maintaining hemostasis, and performing other technical functions. Surgical Assistants (SAs) should meet national standards and be credentialed by the appropriate local authority.
Shifts and Scheduling
Full-time, 4 - 10 hour days per week or flexible 5 - 8 hour days
Essential Functions
- Assists in nursing care and preparation of surgical patients.
- Assembles, organizes and completes case carts according to physician preference lists.
- Provides appropriate instrumentation, sutures and all supplies as requested.
- Assists with positioning of the patient, passing surgical instrumentation, surgical wound retraction, maintaining hemostasis, handling and preparation of grafts, taking cultures, suture and suture removal (with physician in perioperative area), and applying casting and splinting material using proper techniques and established policies.
- Counts, sponges, needles, blades and instruments using proper technique and established policy.
- Assists in maintenance and care of specimens and prepares for laboratory analysis.
- Handles specimens, implants, dressings, soiled instruments, contaminated materials and sharps in accordance with established policies and recommended standards of practice.
- Assists with the timely turnover of rooms, including clean up, replacement and restocking of supplies and equipment.
- May be required to float to other departments (within scope of competency and qualifications) bases on business need.

Minimum Qualifications
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) certification upon hire or within 60 days of hire with prior approval.
- Registered in the state of practice as a Certified First Assistant.
- Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or the American Board of Surgical Assistants.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1 year of Operating Room (OR) scrubbing experience.
- 1 year of clinical experience in an accredited hospital.

- Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
- Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
- Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
- Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
- May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
