Great Opportunity at MSK:Speech-Language Pathologist
The Speech & Swallow Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center treats inpatients and outpatients with a range of speech, language, voice, and swallowing disorders resulting from a range of diagnoses and etiologies. We are seeking a Speech-Language Pathologist that will support both the adult and pediatric population.
Role Overview:
- Perform a variety of evaluations, treatment planning, and interventions for inpatients and outpatients with communication or swallowing difficulties.
- Develop optimal therapeutic treatment and discharge plans for patients with communication and/or swallowing disorders according to principles and practices of the profession to maintain high standards and uniform level of care.
- Provide counseling to patients and their families as needed by explaining the treatment plan and providing pertinent literature to ensure they are well informed and abreast of the patient’s current level of functioning and prognosis.
- Provide appropriate information regarding community resources to the general population and peers within the Speech-Language Pathology community.
- Communicate with family members, physicians, nurses, teachers, and outside agencies regarding results of evaluations, therapeutic interventions and recommendations.
- Provide in services of current knowledge in areas of Speech Pathology and dysphagia and maintain professional liaisons with physicians and staff in training.
- Work closely with the rest of the department to promote continuity of care, best practice and ongoing program growth and development.
- Maintain and enhances professional growth and development to keep abreast of current trends and changes in practice within the Speech-Language pathology profession.
- Document patient visits/consults and maintains proper documentation in patient medical record in accordance with JCAHO and NY State regulations and completes documentation to bill for the services rendered.
- Train speech pathologists and graduate student interns.
- Communicate with the Director of Speech and Hearing and the manager of Speech Pathology regarding programs development and needs.
- Communicate and ensure compliance with department policies and procedures and external regulations.
Key Qualifications:
- New York State Licensure in Speech Pathology
- Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) awarded by the American Speech Language Hearing Association
- Masters degree in Speech Pathology plus one year fellowship
- Will consider a strong candidate eligible for a clinical fellowship
Core Skills:
Experience and a strong interest in working with the Oncology population in an acute care and outpatient setting, including:
- Adult speech, language, and voice evaluation and management for inpatients and outpatients with deficits related to a primary cancer or treatment related sequelae.
- Dysphagia evaluation and treatment in the acute and outpatient settings and ability to determine the need for instrumental evaluation.
- Pediatric speech, language, and feeding/swallowing evaluation and management for inpatients and outpatients with deficits related to a primary cancer or treatment related sequelae. Approximately 25% of caseload will be the coverage of pediatric inpatients and outpatients.
- Adult speech, language, and cognitive evaluation and management for patients with neurological or neurosurgical diagnoses.
- Evaluation and treatment of voice disorders related to vocal cord paralysis, radiation or direct oncology treatment related chances, paradoxical vocal cord movement, and other etiologies of dysphonia.
- Evaluating swallowing and voice with Tracheostomy and ventilator dependent patients.
- Experience with instrumental evaluations of both swallowing and voice- Videofluoroscopy, FEES, Videostroboscopy.
- Ability to manage a high volume, complex, and diverse patient caseload.
