Want to make a difference in the lives of Houston's homeless animals? Become a Friends For Life Volunteer! We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities, and all of them make a true difference to the animals in our care. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and attend volunteer orientation and training. Additional training beyond initial orientation and training may be required for some volunteer opportunities. Community Service hours cannot be completed through the Friends For Life Volunteer Program. Administrative Volunteers Help with the general administrative tasks that help keep the shelter running every day. This includes writing, data entry, filing and much more. Adoption Counselors Support our animals in finding their forever homes by reviewing adoption applications, conducting interviews and working side-by-side with adoptions staff to screen applicants for placement into adoptive homes. Behavior Volunteers Learn about animal behavior and work directly with our behaviorists and trainers to rehabilitate animals at the shelter with behavior challenges. Cat Volunteers Support cats that live at the shelter, or at our Petsmart adoption center, by caring for their daily needs, socializing them, feeding, providing enrichment and maintaining their living spaces. Knowledge of cat behavior is helpful but not required. This opportunity requires a moderate to high level of physical activity. Dog Volunteers Care for dogs that are temporarily boarding at the shelter by walking, providing enrichment, feeding, training, socializing them and maintaining their living spaces. There are two areas within TWRC Wildlife Center in which you can volunteer: The Main Center and the Animal Care Program:
The Main Center is where our Wise Owl volunteers help with accepting animal admission and where Critter Care works with our Animal Ambassadors. The Animal Care Program is where we house admitted wildlife for onsite rehabilitation.
Volunteer Requirements: Volunteers must be 18 years or older. Commit to one 4-hour shift per week. Volunteers pay a $40 registration fee which covers your TWRC Wildlife Center T-shirt, hands-on training with experienced staff, as well as helps cover the high cost of caring for the animals every day. New volunteers are required to attend an orientation that covers all aspects of volunteering with TWRC Wildlife Center
Qualifications: Appreciation of all wild animals. A clear understanding of TWRC Wildlife Center's mission. Ability to follow instructions and willingness to assist wherever needed.  All volunteers will be expected to clean cages, wash dishes, complete laundry, clean floors, etc. Patience and ability to communicate and work with others. Description: The Wildlife Internship provides interns with comprehensive training in TWRC Wildlife Center’s daily operations and wildlife rehabilitation. Training will include daily operations such as animal admissions, TWRC Hotline, and center maintenance. Interns will also gain hands-on experience with small mammals and birds. Our interns work directly with opossums, eastern grey squirrels, fox squirrels, and a large variety of songbirds. This position involves working in a safe clean environment where social distancing and wearing a mask daily is a requirement. Candidates for this position should be friendly, reliable, flexible, motivated, and capable of multi-tasking.
Duties may include: Working TWRC admissions and collecting important information upon animal intake Answering hotline calls and providing correct guidance to the caller Willing to learn and execute appropriate handling of all species Diet preparation and feeding for small mammals and birds in our onsite Animal Care Program Responsible for setting up caging, cleaning cages, and providing enrichment. Provide limited medical care (such as administering medication and giving fluids) under the supervision of program managers Working together with staff and volunteers to complete daily tasks Communicate closely with staff and volunteers Assist education staff with other important tasks to prepare for future programs Responsible for main center duties such as caring for education animals Responsible for doing laundry, dishes, or cleaning areas when assigned Follow all COVID protocols daily; failure to comply will result in disciplinary action or removal from the internship program.
Requirements: Interns must attend a training orientation. Interns must be at least 18 years old by the internship application due date and currently enrolled in college. Interns must commit to a minimum of 200 hours (but maybe as high as 400 hours), at least 4 shifts a week, and 4 to 9 hours a shift. Must be available to work all shifts including early mornings, late nights, and weekends. Any applicable college credit (or additional requirements) must be arranged by the student through his/her institution and presented to TWRC staff during the initial interview. Interns must have reliable transportation. Interns must be able to lift 40lbs. Interns must be able to stand for long periods of time. All applicants must provide a current resume and a letter of recommendation from either a professor, teacher or previous employer in their online application. Note that the completion of an internship does not guarantee full-time or part-time job placement at TWRC Wildlife Center. Applicants should be pursuing a degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, (or closely related field), or Pre-Vet or Graduate classes within the same fields.
