Role Overview
The Application Engineer develops building automation and controls solutions that turn customer requirements, drawings, specifications, and sequences of operation into coordinated system designs, submittals, bills of material, point databases, programming requirements, and field execution plans. This role supports sales-to-operations turnover, programming, commissioning, and customer delivery for commercial HVAC and controls projects.
Core Responsibilities
- Design building automation and controls systems from customer requirements, drawings, specifications, and sequences of operation.
- Create controls designs, submittals, bills of material, point databases, programming requirements, and execution plans.
- Support sales-to-operations turnover through review of estimates, layouts, scope, and technical requirements.
- Select controls products, devices, installation methods, and technical approaches that meet project requirements.
- Program building automation systems for new construction, retrofit, renovation, and service projects.
- Design solutions for commercial HVAC equipment, mechanical systems, electrical control systems, and customer-specific applications.
- Develop network architectures for operator workstations, DDC panels, field controllers, third-party integrations, and connected devices.
- Work with LON, Ethernet, BACnet, and other applicable communication protocols.
- Create and support controller programming, workstations, graphics, and field device configuration.
- Prepare startup, checkout, commissioning, validation, and project documentation.
- Participate in jobsite walkthroughs, customer meetings, contractor meetings, and field activities as needed.
- Serve as a technical resource for operations, sales, project management, technicians, and customers.
Required Background
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
- 3+ years of experience in building automation, HVAC controls, mechanical design, electrical controls, or application engineering
- Strong working knowledge of commercial HVAC equipment, control sequences, controls devices, and networked building systems
- Ability to read mechanical and electrical plans, specifications, wiring diagrams, equipment submittals, and sequences of operation
- Experience with controls design, estimating, drafting, submittals, programming, or related technical software
- Strong technical communication, organization, troubleshooting, and collaboration skills
- Willingness to travel locally to active jobsites, customer facilities, and project meetings as needed
- Experience with BACnet, Niagara/Tridium, Honeywell, Distech, Johnson Controls, Siemens, or comparable platforms is a plus
