Purpose of the Job

As a Senior Technician / Supervising Technician, you will play a critical role in supporting Flyttr's insect rearing and development programs by overseeing daily laboratory and colony operations while providing hands-on technical expertise. You will help ensure the consistent production of high-quality insects, support experimental activities, and maintain safe, efficient, and compliant laboratory operations.

You will serve as a key point of contact within the team, providing day-to-day guidance and training to technicians while working closely with scientists and operational leaders to deliver against project objectives. Through your leadership, technical skills, and commitment to continuous improvement, you will help drive reliable execution of research and production activities that directly contribute to Flyttr's mission.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Supervision

  • Provide day-to-day supervision, guidance, and support to Laboratory Technicians, fostering a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and collaboration.
  • Train, mentor, and onboard new team members, ensuring training records remain current and completion standards are met.
  • Coordinate technician work schedules and daily activities to ensure operational priorities and project timelines are achieved.
  • Monitor team performance and provide feedback to support development and continuous improvement.
  • Escalate operational issues, resource constraints, and risks to management as appropriate.

Insect Rearing & Technical Operations

  • Oversee and participate in the daily maintenance, monitoring, and scaling of insect colonies to ensure health, quality, and availability.
  • Ensure insects are produced and supplied at the required quality and scale to support research, development, and operational objectives.
  • Execute and support experimental protocols related to insect rearing, process development, and operational improvement activities.
  • Prepare insect diets, stock solutions, and other materials required to support insectary and laboratory operations.
  • Assist with the maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory and insectary equipment.

Experimental Support & Data Management

  • Conduct experiments and technical activities in accordance with approved protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Collect, record, organize, and perform preliminary analysis of experimental and operational data.
  • Communicate experimental progress, findings, and operational updates clearly to scientists, engineers, and management.
  • Support the generation of reports, presentations, and documentation required for project delivery.

Process Improvement & Compliance

  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve efficiency, quality, reliability, and consistency of laboratory and insectary processes.
  • Support the development, review, and continuous improvement of SOPs, work instructions, and operational documentation.
  • Assist with inventory management, supply ordering, and resource planning to ensure uninterrupted operations.
  • Support quality, compliance, and audit readiness activities as required.

Health, Safety & Biosecurity

  • Ensure compliance with all health, safety, biosecurity, containment, and operational procedures.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient working environment.
  • Support the completion and upkeep of risk assessments, safety documentation, and training records.
  • Promote a strong culture of safety and responsible laboratory practices across the team.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with scientists, engineers, and operational teams to support project deliverables and business objectives.
  • Contribute to planning discussions and operational reviews to ensure alignment across teams.
  • Provide flexible support across projects and workstreams in response to changing business priorities.
  • Support occasional weekend, holiday, or after-hours work as required by operational and colony care needs.

Skills, Experience, and Education Requirements

Essential

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Entomology, Animal Science, Life Sciences, or a related scientific discipline, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience working in a laboratory, insectary, agricultural, biological sciences, or related operational environment.
  • Demonstrated experience following standardized procedures and maintaining accurate technical records.
  • Experience coordinating work activities, training colleagues, mentoring team members, or providing informal or formal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to identify problems, troubleshoot effectively, and implement practical solutions.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.

Desirable

  • Experience with insect rearing, entomology, mosquito production, or arthropod colony management.
  • Experience working in regulated, quality-controlled, manufacturing, research, or production environments.
  • Experience writing, updating, or implementing SOPs and training documentation.
  • Experience supporting health and safety programs, risk assessments, or compliance activities.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment, inventory control systems, and operational planning processes.

Hazards and Safety Information

  • This role involves working with live insects and biological materials within contained laboratory and insectary environments.
  • The position requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with all company safety, biosecurity, and containment procedures.
  • The role may require standing for extended periods, repetitive movements, lifting materials and equipment, and working in environmentally controlled spaces.
