Position Overview
The Traveling Mechanical Superintendent will lead and coordinate mechanical construction activities across multiple project sites, ensuring safe, on-time, and on-budget delivery. This role requires hands-on supervision of journeyman and labor crews, strict adherence to OSHA and project safety standards, compliance with collective bargaining agreements (CBA), and frequent travel to remote and regional job locations. The ideal candidate balances technical mechanical expertise with strong leadership, communication, and logistical skills to drive quality and productivity across projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision for mechanical construction crews, including journeymen and laborers, across multiple job sites.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate mechanical installation work to meet project milestones and contractual requirements while managing travel logistics and accommodations.
  • Enforce safety policies and procedures, ensure OSHA compliance, conduct site safety meetings, and act to correct unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and scope of work; coordinate with project managers, general contractors, and engineering teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements (CBA), manage union relations on site, and coordinate work rules, overtime, and jurisdictional matters.
  • Monitor quality of workmanship, perform inspections, and implement corrective actions to maintain project standards and client expectations.
  • Manage field documentation including daily reports, manpower tracking, timekeeping, change orders, and submittals.
  • Control labor productivity and costs by supervising crews, optimizing resource allocation, and reporting on budget and schedule performance.
  • Mentor and develop crew members, enforce trade best practices, and facilitate on-the-job training for journeyman and apprentice personnel.
  • Coordinate rigging, lifting, and equipment needs; ensure proper permits and certifications are in place for specialized mechanical activities.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7+ years of mechanical construction experience with at least 3 years in a superintendent or lead superintendent role.
  • Journeyman ticket or equivalent mechanical trade certification (pipefitter, plumber, HVAC, or related).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CBA requirements and experience managing union labor on site.
  • Current OSHA 30 certification; strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and a proven safety leadership record.
  • Proven experience with mechanical systems installation (piping, pumps, HVAC, pressure piping, or rotating equipment).
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills with the ability to coordinate across multiple stakeholders and remote teams.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently and work extended hours on rotating job assignments; valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Proficiency with project documentation, scheduling tools, and basic computer skills (email, spreadsheets, reporting).
  • Physical ability to work in construction environments and use of personal protective equipment; valid first aid/CPR preferred.
  • Preferred: welding certification, NCCER or equivalent craft instructor credentials, prior experience with industrial or heavy civil mechanical projects.
