Job Title: Process Controller/Quality Technician

Job Description

The Process Controller is a hands-on quality role on the food manufacturing floor, responsible for ensuring that frozen food products are produced according to established formulas, weight specifications, food safety requirements, and quality standards. This position focuses on in-process quality control rather than laboratory work, and involves continuous inspection, measurement, documentation, and communication with production employees to address any conditions that fall outside approved specifications.

Responsibilities

• Work directly on the production floor alongside manufacturing lines in an active frozen food production environment.
• Review the product being produced and confirm the applicable formulas and specifications for each production run.
• Verify that the correct ingredients and ingredient part numbers have been staged before the line starts.
• Confirm that ingredients on the line match the approved product formula prior to packaging.
• Perform routine process and quality checks throughout the shift at multiple stages of production.
• Check product weights against established target, minimum, and maximum ranges to maintain weight control.
• Use production-quality equipment including scales, thermometers, calipers, Quantum meters, Bostwick meters, and other measurement tools as required by the product and process.
• Accurately enter quality measurements and inspection results into a tablet and applicable statistical process control (SPC) documentation.
• Complete SPC weight sheets and graph weight data to determine whether production remains within specification.
• Perform mass-balance checks at least twice per shift to validate material usage and yield.
• Inspect product at multiple stages of production before packaging to verify conformance to quality and food safety standards.
• Document any condition that falls outside the established standard and promptly communicate food safety or quality concerns.
• Collaborate with Production when an ingredient, weight, measurement, or product condition does not meet specification, and help support corrective actions.
• Maintain clean measuring equipment, scales, and work areas to support sanitation and accurate measurement.
• Help train new employees on applicable process control procedures, standards, and quality expectations.
• Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), food safety protocols, and plant safety requirements throughout the shift.
• Work overtime as needed based on production demands while maintaining consistent quality and safety practices.

Essential Skills

• Experience performing quality control, inspection, or process checks in a manufacturing environment, preferably food production.
• Ability to verify ingredients, weights, measurements, and finished products against established specifications.
• Understanding of GMP, food safety, sanitation, and regulated manufacturing practices such as HACCP and SQF.
• Proficiency in data collection, including accurately recording measurements, test results, and deviations using tablets, worksheets, and basic computer systems.
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify out-of-spec conditions and communicate concerns clearly.
• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced production environment while maintaining accuracy and consistency.
• Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC) methods and documentation.
• Capability to use and maintain quality measurement tools such as scales, thermometers, calipers, Quantum meters, and Bostwick meters.
• Knowledge of weight control principles and scale calibration procedures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in food manufacturing, food production, or frozen foods is highly beneficial.
• Experience working with vegetable-based or gluten-free products and varied sizes, shapes, and weights is an advantage.
• Comfort training and mentoring new employees on process control and quality procedures.
• Ability to interpret graphs and SPC charts to support process improvement.
• Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with production teams and other departments.
• Organizational skills to manage multiple checks, documentation requirements, and inspections throughout the shift.

Work Environment

This is a hands-on, on-site position within an active frozen food manufacturing facility in Illinois. The role is primarily based on the production floor, with regular interaction with flexible baking lines and high-speed topping lines that produce gluten-free and vegetable-based pizza crusts, topped pizzas, and snack products. The Process Controller works a second shift schedule from approximately 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., with overtime dependent on production needs. The workday involves a combination of walking the production floor, conducting inspections, taking measurements, and entering data into tablets and SPC documentation. Team members use various quality measurement tools, including scales, thermometers, calipers, Quantum meters, and Bostwick meters, and must consistently follow plant GMP, food safety, and safety requirements. The environment is fast-paced, collaborative, and focused on maintaining high standards of product quality and food safety.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Manteno, IL.

The pay range for this position is $18.50 - $21.61/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
