Technical Writer

This Technical Writer role focuses on reviewing and developing technical documentation and supporting engineering, purchasing, and sales teams throughout the quotation and order process. You will compare customer specifications, bills of materials, and engineering designs for accuracy, perform technical evaluations of supplier quotations, and help prepare cost estimates. The position requires strong technical writing skills, the ability to interpret blueprints and specifications, and close collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance, quality, and timely delivery of customer solutions.

Responsibilities

• Compare quotes, customer specifications, bills of materials, and engineering designs for accuracy, making corrections or updates as needed.
• Perform technical evaluations of quotations from suppliers in close cooperation with the purchasing team.
• Ensure full compliance with all applicable requirements imposed by customers and statutory bodies.
• Review supplier engineering information and documentation, including mechanical drawings, schematics, calculations, and electrical diagrams.
• Contribute to the engineering order release process by helping to develop and review all documentation.
• Help prepare cost estimates by studying drawings, customer specifications, plans, and related customer documents, and by consulting with engineers or other technical personnel.
• Provide input and updates for the engineering database and NetSuite, including purchase orders, parts, quotes, bills of materials, and other documentation.
• Perform required technical calculations to validate designs.
• Participate in design checks and reviews to ensure required quality standards.
• Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of the engineering department.
• Assist with developing designs, prints, and bills of materials for projects.
• Analyze customer needs based on blueprints and specifications to determine when to send quotes and how to process orders.
• Problem-solve and communicate effectively with the work team to resolve technical and process-related issues.
• Contribute ideas for continuous improvement of workflow and processes.
• Suggest ideas for standardization and for managing customer expectations.
• Follow all safety guidelines and procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills

• Proven technical writing skills with the ability to create and review clear, accurate technical documentation.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings, including understanding specifications and technical requirements.
• Experience analyzing customer specifications and bills of materials to support quoting and order processing.
• Strong customer-facing communication skills with a high level of professionalism.
• Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, purchasing, sales, and other teams while effectively managing deadlines.
• Experience in pricing and quoting in a technical or manufacturing context.
• Proficiency with SAP for handling quotes, orders, and related data.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including use of formulas for calculations and data analysis.
• Quick and accurate data entry skills with strong attention to detail.
• Ability to perform technical calculations to validate engineering designs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in business administration, sales, engineering, or a related field is desired; equivalent work experience is also valued.
• Minimum of 12 years of administrative sales experience in a manufacturing setting is preferred.
• Familiarity with NetSuite or similar ERP systems for managing purchase orders, parts, quotes, and bills of materials.
• Experience working with engineering databases and structured documentation processes.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset.
• Ability to contribute to standardization of documentation and processes to better manage customer expectations.

Work Environment

You will work in a collaborative, engineering-driven environment that supports close interaction with purchasing, sales, and other cross-functional teams. The role involves frequent use of engineering documentation such as mechanical drawings, schematics, electrical diagrams, and bills of materials, as well as regular work within systems like SAP, NetSuite, and Microsoft Excel. The position typically follows standard business hours in a professional office or hybrid office/manufacturing setting, where adherence to established safety guidelines and procedures is essential. This is a Permanent position based out of Beloit, WI.

The pay range for this position is $70000.00 - $80000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
