Electronics Engineer – Usability Lab Technology
Position Overview
Design Science, a division of BlueRidge Life Sciences, is a human factors consulting company dedicated to testing medical devices for pharmaceutical and medical device clients. We are seeking a technically resourceful professional with 2-3 years of hands-on experience in electronics, audiovisual (AV) systems, instrumentation, or technical lab support. In this role, you will help create reliable study environments and test fixtures while building expertise in usability research, participant moderation, analysis, and reporting.
This position is designed for someone who wants to grow. You will receive structured training from experienced human factors professionals and increasing opportunities to contribute to study planning and execution. Your work will help researchers identify use-related challenges and generate insights that can improve medical product safety and the experience of patients and healthcare professionals.
Prior human factors experience is welcome but not required. We value curiosity, sound technical judgment, critical thinking, empathy, and a willingness to learn.
Key Responsibilities
- Configure, test, and troubleshoot cameras, microphones, recording systems, displays, and remote observation equipment.
- Develop practical solutions for capturing participant interactions, device use, and audio across varied study setups.
- Prepare and test equipment before sessions to ensure clear audio and visual recordings and reliable live observation.
- Resolve technical issues during studies while minimizing disruption to participants, researchers, and clients.
- Maintain lab equipment, document configurations, and develop setup instructions and troubleshooting guides.
- Recommend equipment improvements and backup solutions to strengthen lab performance and reliability.
- Collaborate with study teams to translate research needs into effective technical setups.
- Handle study recordings and participant information according to company confidentiality and data-handling procedures.
- Help create a dependable, welcoming study environment that enable participants to provide meaningful feedback.
Human Factors Research With Training and Mentorship
- Assist with study preparation, materials, and conducting participant sessions.
- Observe, support, and progressively moderate interviews and usability sessions using approved protocols.
- Document participant behavior, feedback, and user difficulties accurately and objectively.
- Support data analysis and study reports.
- Develop knowledge of human factors methods, use-related risk, and applicable regulatory guidance.
- Connect participant insights to design improvements and safety-related decisions.
Required Qualifications
- BA/BS electronics engineering, electrical engineering, electronics engineering technology, or a related technical field; equivalent experience may be considered.
- 2-3 years of hands-on experience with electronics, AV systems, instrumentation, or technical lab support.
- Ability to configure, integrate, and troubleshoot equipment.
- Experience diagnosing audio/video, connectivity, recording, or equipment compatibility issues.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in written and oral communication.
- Professional interpersonal skills and comfort dealing with patients, caregivers, colleagues, and clients.
- Interest in human factors/usability research and study facilitation.
- Openness to feedback and ability to work onsite for lab preparation and scheduled study sessions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting research labs, usability studies, ergonomic assessment, medical product testing, or similar methods.
- Familiarity with remote observation platforms, networked AV equipment, screen capture, or synchronized recording.
- Experience creating technical documentation or training others.
- Experience in regulated, quality-focused, or safety-critical environment.
