As part of our continued growth in thePowersector, we are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Electrical Engineerto join our multidisciplinary team in our Boston office. This role plays a critical part in shaping the design of high-voltage substations that support the safe, efficient, and resilient operation of the nation’s electric grid.

As a Senior Electrical Engineer in Vanderweil’s Power Group, you will be serving with and mentoring a team designing unique projects involving campus, industrial and institutional energy and utility generation systems, focused on simple cycle gas turbine and reciprocating engine power plants, combined heat and power, alternative fuels like biogas and hydrogen, fuel cells, thermal and battery storage, microgrids, among many other cutting-edge technologies. We serve a diverse set of clients including academic, biopharma, casino/hotel resorts, mission critical, and large scale and municipal utilities, among many other sectors.

Some of your Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of switchgear, renewables and protection/control design packages for projects ranging from 4160 to 34.5kV.
  • Oversee the preparation of equipment layouts, grounding designs, conduit/cable routing plans, and wiring diagrams.
  • Direct the creation of panel layouts, protection schematics, and control wiring drawings in accordance with utility standards.
  • Serve as the primary design interface with engineers, project managers, and external stakeholders to ensure design quality and schedule alignment.
  • Support field installation efforts with constructability reviews, field markups, and as-built drawing updates.
  • Review and approve drawing packages prepared by junior designers; provide mentoring and training support.
  • Champion design quality and process improvements through peer reviews, lessons learned, and adoption of new tools and methods.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or Power Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in related field of power generation and heavy industrial projects, with at least 7 years’ experience with medium voltage (5kV/15kV) and low voltage (480v) design of industrial and process plants.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Revit for switchgear design and modeling
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate cross-discipline design efforts and lead drafting teams.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Utilize knowledge of IEEE, IBC, NESC, and NEC electrical codes and knowledge of industry products and design solutions Exceptional knowledge of Excel, Revit, SKM, AGI 32 and AMPCALC 4 required.
  • Able to perform arc-flash, short circuit, grounding, relay settings, time current curves, drop calculations, voltage drop calculations, lighting power density using SKM, ETAP, CYME and AGI lighting software.
  • Strong analytical ability and proven Leadership experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • PE highly preferred; LEED preferred.

This is a high-visibility role, and the total compensation we expect to pay for this position is dependent on years of experience, licensure, education, geographic location, and project portfolio. The expected compensation range is $165,000 to $205,000. This range is intended as a guideline based on the anticipated qualifications and responsibilities of the role; depending on a candidate’s experience, expertise, and overall qualifications, compensation may be considered above this range when appropriate.
