The Senior Accounting Manager (CPA or CMA) is an accounting leader responsible for both high-volume transactional accounting and higher-level financial oversight. This position personally manages daily accounts payable, accounts receivable, payment processing, cash activity, reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting while supervising an Accounting Associate primarily responsible for accounts receivable. Success requires someone who is comfortable moving between detailed data entry, daily problem-solving, team management, and accurate GAAP-compliant reporting in a fast-paced, multi-entity environment.
This is not a review-only, advisory, or purely managerial accounting position. The successful candidate must be willing and able to personally process a significant volume of daily transactions, maintain accuracy under frequent deadlines and interruptions, and take ownership of both routine accounting work and complex financial responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Personally perform and support high-volume daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payment processing, cash application, account maintenance, transaction entry, and reconciliation.
- Oversee accounts receivable operations and personally assist with invoicing, cash application, collections, account reconciliation, refunds, deposits, and issue resolution as volume and deadlines require.
- Direct, support, and hold accountable the Accounting Associate responsible primarily for accounts receivable, including assigning priorities, reviewing work, resolving escalated issues, providing training, and ensuring daily and monthly deadlines are met.
- Manage the month-end close process, including preparation and review of journal entries, accruals, supporting schedules, and account reconciliations.
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly financial statements and management reports, including consolidation of multiple entities.
- Review and reconcile balance sheet accounts; investigate and resolve discrepancies promptly.
- Reconcile and explain variances between actual results and monthly revenue projections for each branch.
- Manage daily cash activity, bank reconciliations, payment processing, and weekly cash-flow reporting.
- Prepare monthly commission reports and maintain accurate supporting documentation.
- Maintain fixed-asset records and track capital expenditures.
- Monitor accounts receivable aging, support collection efforts, and coordinate lien filings when appropriate.
- Maintain strong internal controls and ensure accounting records comply with GAAP and company policies.
- Coordinate annual insurance audits and provide accurate schedules and supporting documentation.
- Prepare minority-business applications and related documentation.
- Support special projects, including business acquisitions, system improvements, process documentation, and other accounting initiatives.
- Communicate clearly with branch leaders, vendors, customers, and internal stakeholders to resolve accounting issues and meet deadlines.
- Perform other accounting-related duties assigned by the supervisor or manager.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, with at least three years of progressive accounting experience in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment. Candidates must have demonstrated hands-on experience processing accounts payable, accounts receivable, payments, cash activity, reconciliations, financial and management reports, and multi-entity consolidations, as well as experience supervising or developing accounting staff.
- Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certification required. The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting knowledge with the willingness and capacity to perform detailed daily accounting work consistently.
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, financial reporting, journal entries, and account reconciliation.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with QuickBooks or a comparable accounting system.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and complete a high volume of recurring transactions while managing competing daily, weekly, and month-end deadlines without sacrificing accuracy or follow-through.
- Proven ability to lead, train, prioritize work for, and hold accounting staff accountable.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve issues independently using available written or verbal guidance.
- Excellent written, telephone, and in-person communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across departments and maintain a collaborative team environment.
- High level of accuracy, confidentiality, integrity, dependability, and professional judgment.
- Successful completion of required background check and drug screening.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a multi-entity, multi-branch, professional-services, construction, engineering, or similarly transaction-intensive environment.
- Experience supporting business acquisitions, audit preparation, process improvement, or accounting-system enhancements.
- Working knowledge of lien processes and collections practices.
