Position Summary

The Business Banker develops and manages profitable commercial and small-business relationships, including loans, deposits, treasury and digital services, and appropriate referrals. A Business-Mortgage Banker also originates residential mortgage credit within assigned authority and applicable registration requirements. The position is accountable for responsible growth, sound credit quality, complete documentation, portfolio administration, and responsive client service.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Business Development and Relationship Management

  • Develop and execute a calling plan for prospects, existing clients, and centers of influence within the assigned market.
  • Grow full banking relationships through needs-based commercial lending, deposits, treasury services, digital services, and referrals to appropriate partners.
  • Maintain regular client contact, respond promptly to service needs, and coordinate solutions across lending, credit, operations, retail, and other departments.
  • Represent the Bank at business, civic, networking, and community activities.

Credit Origination and Portfolio Management

  • Originate and structure authorized commercial and small-business credit, including lines of credit, term loans, and commercial real-estate loans.
  • Obtain and analyze financial statements, tax returns, cash flow, collateral, guarantor support, industry conditions, and other information needed to assess repayment and risk.
  • Prepare or coordinate complete credit requests and present recommendations through the Bank's approval process.
  • Negotiate terms within approved authority and ensure pricing, structure, collateral, covenants, documentation, and closing conditions align with approval.
  • Monitor assigned relationships for financial reporting, covenants, exceptions, delinquencies, maturities, risk-rating changes, and emerging concerns; take timely action.
  • Maintain complete relationship and loan records and comply with delegated lending authority and exception-approval requirements.

Mortgage Responsibilities, When Assigned

  • Originate residential mortgage loans in accordance with Bank products, underwriting standards, disclosures, timelines, and compensation rules.
  • Maintain required mortgage-loan-originator registration and renewals under the SAFE Act and Bank policy before performing covered duties.
  • Provide applicants consistent, accurate information and avoid steering, discouragement, or differential treatment on a prohibited basis.

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Follow applicable fair-lending and consumer-protection requirements, including Equal Credit Opportunity, Fair Housing, flood insurance, appraisal, credit-reporting, privacy, information-security, and servicemember protections.
  • For residential mortgage activities, follow applicable Truth in Lending, real-estate settlement, mortgage-reporting, and other disclosure and timing requirements.
  • Follow Bank Secrecy Act/anti-money-laundering, customer-identification, customer-due-diligence, beneficial-ownership, sanctions, fraud-prevention, and recordkeeping procedures.
  • Identify and promptly escalate unusual, suspicious, fraudulent, complaint-related, or higher-risk activity.
  • Complete required training and perform other related duties consistent with the position's purpose and level of responsibility.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, accounting, economics, or a related field preferred; comparable directly relevant experience may be considered.
  • At least four years of business banking, commercial lending, credit, or related financial-services experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated business-development success and working knowledge of commercial credit analysis, loan structuring, and portfolio management.
  • Residential mortgage experience and eligibility for required mortgage-loan-originator registration are required when mortgage duties are assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong business-development, relationship-management, negotiation, presentation, and community-engagement skills.
  • Ability to analyze business financial information, cash flow, collateral, structure, pricing, and risk.
  • Working knowledge of commercial lending, loan documentation, portfolio administration, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Sound credit judgment, organization, confidentiality, responsiveness, and ability to manage multiple relationships and deadlines.
  • Proficiency with required banking, credit-analysis, loan-origination, and office systems.
  • Ability to travel regularly for client calls, site visits, closings, and community activities.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Regularly communicates with clients and Bank personnel, reviews detailed financial and legal documents, and uses computers and office equipment.
  • Frequently sits, stands, walks, and travels locally; occasionally moves files or materials up to 20 pounds.
  • Works in office, client, construction, and community settings with varying schedules and conditions.
  • May work outside normal business hours for client needs, closings, travel, or community events.
