Job Title: IT Project Engineer (MSP)
Location: [Woodstock, Georgia/ On-site & Field Work]
Position Type: Full-Time
Department: Professional Services / Project Engineering
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and proactive IT Project Engineer to lead and execute client-focused technical projects, with a strong emphasis on office relocations, new building developments, physical IT infrastructure setups, and custom network architecture.
In this role, you will bridge the gap between IT design, physical construction, and client operations. You will collaborate directly with business owners, General Contractors (GCs), architects, and sub-contractors (Low-Voltage, A/V, Electricians) to turn empty physical spaces or legacy environments into fully operational, high-performance IT environments.
Key Responsibilities
Project Execution & Physical Architecture
- Lead physical office setups, office moves/relocations, buildouts, and new construction IT deployments from initial discovery through post-cutover support.
- Read and interpret electrical, architectural, and low-voltage construction drawings to coordinate server room/MDF/IDF layouts, drop locations, rack elevations, and cable runs.
- Coordinate on-site with General Contractors, Electricians, Low-Voltage Installers, and Audio/Visual vendors to ensure project timelines, physical standards, and ADA/code requirements are met.
- Perform pre-construction site surveys and generate post-installation punch lists to ensure complete project accuracy before client handoff.
- Evaluate vendor proposals for fidelity to the scope of work and precision in cost estimation.
- Identify technical gaps, risks, conflicts, and missing requirements early and communicate them to the project manager and project team.
- Partner closely with the project manager to provide timely technical guidance, requirements, dependencies, risks, and recommended solutions throughout the project lifecycle.
Network & Systems Design
- Design, configure, and deploy robust, enterprise-grade network solutions (firewalls, routers, core/edge switches, VLANs, Wi-Fi networks, and VPNs) customized for client needs.
- Implement hybrid cloud and on-premises infrastructure, including Microsoft 365, Entra ID (Azure AD), Active Directory, Hyper-V, and local SAN/NAS deployments.
- Recommend, source, and configure uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), rack cooling/HVAC solutions, and cable management standards for client server closets.
- Develop creative, cost-effective, and scalable IT solutions tailored to unique client business requirements and physical site constraints.
Client Relations & Technical Consulting
- Serve as the primary technical contact for clients during active project phases, explaining complex IT concepts clearly and professionally to non-technical stakeholders.
- Conduct discovery meetings with business decisionmakers to assess project scope and propose strategic technology upgrades.
- Assist in drafting technical Statements of Work (SOWs), Bill of Materials (BOMs), and project scopes while actively managing and mitigating scope creep.
Documentation & Handover
- Build comprehensive technical documentation, detailed network diagrams (Visio/Lucidchart), IP schemes, and cable maps for every completed project.
- Conduct formal project handovers to the Tier 1–3 Managed Support Desk to ensure smooth ongoing maintenance and operational support.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: 4+ years of advanced networking design/implementation experience, alongside proven experience managing IT projects and physical site setups in an MSP or professional services environment.
- Blueprint Reading: Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and work from low-voltage, electrical, and commercial architectural blueprints.
- Vendor & GC Coordination: Hands-on experience working directly with General Contractors, Trades, and external vendors on job sites.
- Advanced Networking: Deep practical expertise with enterprise routing, switching, firewalls (e.g., Fortinet, SonicWall, Cisco Meraki), wireless survey/deployment (e.g., Ubiquiti, Meraki, Ruckus), and network segmentation/VLANs.
- Client-Facing Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with a customer-first mindset and strong dispute-resolution capabilities on active job sites.
- Driver’s License & Mobility: Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for frequent travel to local client project sites.
Preferred Qualifications & Certifications
- Certifications: Network+, Ubiquiti Enterprise Wireless, Microsoft Certified (AZ-104 or MS-102), Security+.
- Virtualization & Systems: Hands-on familiarity with Microsoft Hyper-V, Windows Server OS, Entra ID, and Veeam/Datto backup solutions.
- MSP Tooling: Experience using MSP Professional Services Automation (PSA) tools (e.g., ConnectWise Manage, Autotask, HaloPSA) for project tracking and time logging.
