Mechanical Engineer I/II – HVAC & Building Systems

Locations: Boise, ID | Denver, CO | Sacramento, CA
Work Arrangement: On-site/Hybrid preferred; fully remote may be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates

Position Overview

Our client is seeking a Mechanical Engineer I/II with strong experience designing HVAC, plumbing, and related mechanical systems for commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities. This role will be responsible for the technical development of mechanical systems from initial design and schematic development through construction documents and construction administration. The ideal candidate can perform detailed HVAC and plumbing design with minimal supervision and understands how to develop efficient, cost-effective, and constructible building systems.

Candidates should be strong technical problem-solvers with excellent communication and collaboration skills. This position is well suited for a motivated, self-directed engineer who enjoys working with multidisciplinary project teams and is seeking career growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design HVAC, plumbing, and related mechanical systems for institutional, retail, commercial, and industrial building projects.
  • Specify and size mechanical equipment, including air-handling units, chillers, cooling towers, compressors, and related equipment.
  • Perform HVAC load calculations, equipment sizing, system selection, and other engineering calculations.
  • Develop coordinated, technically sound construction documents that are clear, efficient, cost-effective, and constructible.
  • Research and analyze client requirements, design proposals, specifications, technical manuals, and other information to determine design feasibility and appropriate solutions.
  • Assist with or manage project scope, budgets, schedules, QA/QC reviews, and client expectations.
  • Review project documents for technical accuracy, coordination, quality, and code compliance.
  • Provide construction administration support, including reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and coordinating with contractors, architects, owners, building officials, and other project stakeholders.
  • Conduct field observations of mechanical systems and participate in project and construction meetings.
  • Make recommendations regarding mechanical system design and performance.
  • Support building management system (BMS) design and coordination.
  • Prepare technical reports, memoranda, specifications, and other project documentation.
  • Coordinate with architects, owners, engineers from other disciplines, vendors, and consultants throughout all phases of design and construction.
  • Meet project schedules and established design and construction administration budgets.
  • Provide technical guidance and coordination to designers and engineers-in-training as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred, in any U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience designing mechanical and HVAC systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with HVAC and plumbing system design.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Revit and Bluebeam
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of applicable ICC codes and the ability to apply code requirements to mechanical system design.
  • Ability to independently perform HVAC calculations, equipment selection, and mechanical system design.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate with clients and multidisciplinary design teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with energy modeling software.
  • Mechanical design experience for healthcare facilities.
  • Python programming experience.
  • Experience using AI-enabled workflows or tools for mechanical and/or plumbing design.

NOTE: Actual salary will depend on experience.

Work Location

Candidates located near Boise, Denver, or Sacramento are preferred. A fully remote arrangement may be considered for candidates whose mechanical design experience and qualifications are an exceptional match for the position.
