Job Title: R&D Test TechnicianJob Description

The R&D Test Technician will support the engineering team by performing hands-on build, assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of medical devices and associated fixtures. This role plays a key part in delivering high-quality prototype builds, executing precise tests, and maintaining reliable documentation to support design verification, process validation, and product development activities. The position suits an experienced, detail-oriented technician who thrives in a regulated medical device environment and collaborates effectively with engineers, quality professionals, and manufacturing teams. You will contribute directly to the development of a state-of-the-art device designed to provide minimally invasive therapy for prostate cancer, which has received U.S. FDA Breakthrough Device Designation.

Responsibilities
  • Build and assemble electro-mechanical medical devices, prototypes, and associated fixtures according to engineering drawings, schematics, and work instructions.
  • Set up, execute, and document test methods to support design verification, process validation, and ongoing product development activities.
  • Perform hands-on testing on capital equipment, including tests conducted under water, as well as on single-use medical devices.
  • Use hand tools, measurement tools, and test equipment to assemble, calibrate, and verify the performance of devices and fixtures.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electro-mechanical issues, identify root causes, and support implementation of corrective actions in collaboration with engineering and quality teams.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, schematics, test methods, and work instructions at or above an 8th-grade reading level to ensure accurate build and test execution.
  • Review and complete documentation accurately, including test records, build logs, calibration records, and other quality-related documentation in compliance with regulated environment requirements.
  • Support the development, review, and refinement of test methods and work instructions to improve clarity, repeatability, and efficiency.
  • Assist with fixture assembly, repair, and maintenance to ensure test equipment remains functional, calibrated, and safe to use.
  • Use data acquisition tools and test instrumentation to collect, monitor, and record test data, and support analysis of results.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, engineering, quality, and manufacturing to support product development and continuous improvement.
  • Work independently to prioritize tasks, follow schedules, and complete assigned testing and build activities on time.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following laboratory and facility procedures for handling equipment and materials.
Essential Skills
  • 1 or 2-year technical degree or certification in mechanical, electrical, biomedical, or related engineering technology field.
  • 3+ years of experience working in medical device companies in an R&D, engineering, testing, or manufacturing support role.
  • Strong proficiency with hand tools, measurement tools, fixture assembly, and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Experience performing documented testing in a regulated environment, preferably within medical devices.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, test methods, schematics, blueprints, and work instructions.
  • Proficiency using test equipment and measurement devices for validation and verification activities.
  • Ability to perform calibration and basic repair of fixtures and test setups as needed.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and documentation accuracy to support regulatory and quality requirements.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work both independently and within cross-functional teams.
  • Comfort working with electro-mechanical devices and systems in a structured, process-driven environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience building electro-mechanical devices or systems, including capital equipment and single-use devices.
  • Familiarity with tolerance stack-ups and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Exposure to basic machining or 3D printing processes for prototype or fixture fabrication.
  • Experience with data acquisition tools and test instrumentation to support automated or semi-automated testing.
  • Familiarity with scripting or basic programming to support automated testing workflows.
  • Experience with documentation review and validation activities related to test methods and work instructions.
  • Ability to support troubleshooting and repair of test equipment and fixtures in a laboratory or R&D environment.
Work Environment

This role is 100% on-site in a regulated medical device development environment. You will work primarily in laboratory and engineering spaces, performing testing on capital equipment, including tests conducted under water, as well as on single-use medical devices. The position requires frequent use of hand tools, measurement tools, test equipment, and data acquisition systems, along with regular interaction with engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams. You will work independently for significant portions of the day, following written test methods and work instructions, and are expected to read and understand documentation at or above an 8th-grade level. The environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and organization, with adherence to established procedures and quality system requirements. Dress will align with typical laboratory and engineering settings, including appropriate attire and any required personal protective equipment as defined by site procedures.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Maple Grove, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
