Software Engineering Manager

Robert Half is hiring! We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager to guide backend engineering efforts and help shape reliable, scalable platforms. This role combines people leadership with technical ownership, requiring someone who can support team growth while steering architecture and delivery decisions. You will work closely with cross-functional partners to build backend capabilities that power web and mobile experiences and strengthen long-term platform health.

Responsibilities:

• Guide and support backend engineers through coaching, regular feedback, and career development conversations that strengthen individual and team performance.

• Set clear engineering expectations, development practices, and quality standards that enable dependable releases and sustainable execution.

• Direct the architectural vision for backend applications and services, ensuring technical choices align with product goals and operational needs.

• Collaborate with product, mobile, and business partners to turn functional needs into practical, well-designed technical solutions.

• Lead project planning activities, including prioritization, estimation, scheduling, and delivery oversight across engineering initiatives.

• Evaluate design approaches and technical recommendations, offering architectural input that improves scalability, resilience, and maintainability.

• Build and evolve backend systems and APIs that effectively support web platforms and native mobile applications.

• Work with mobile engineering teams on service interfaces, data structures, authentication patterns, notification capabilities, and other backend features required for mobile use cases.

• Champion strong engineering discipline across testing, code review, documentation, deployment, monitoring, incident response, and ongoing reduction of technical debt.

• Contribute to team growth through hiring, onboarding, performance management, stakeholder communication, and hands-on support for high-impact technical work when needed.

• At least 6 years of experience in software engineering, including substantial work designing and developing backend systems.
• Minimum of 2 years leading or managing software engineering teams in a delivery-focused environment.
• Strong knowledge of backend system design, distributed architecture, API development, databases, and cloud-based infrastructure.
• Proven experience building and operating highly available, scalable production services using languages such as Java, Python, C#, or Node.js.
• Background supporting backend services used by native iOS or Android applications, with an understanding of mobile integration considerations.
• Solid grasp of the software development lifecycle, including testing practices, CI/CD, observability, and production support.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills, with the ability to balance business needs, technical constraints, and long-term maintainability.
• Experience hiring, mentoring, and developing engineering talent; familiarity with technologies such as Kubernetes, Terraform, microservices, event-driven systems, or major cloud platforms is a plus.
