Controls Engineer Position Summary
The Controls Engineer is responsible for programming, troubleshooting, and improving automation and control systems throughout the manufacturing facility. This role is approximately 50% hands-on production support and 50% engineering/project work, with a focus on Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and automated production equipment.
Key Responsibilities Controls & Automation
- Program, troubleshoot, and modify Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs using Studio 5000 and RSLogix.
- Develop and troubleshoot ladder logic, HMIs, VFDs, servo systems, sensors, motors, and drives.
- Diagnose controls-related downtime and perform root cause analysis.
- Support automated equipment including coil coating lines, slitters, conveyors, packaging equipment, and material handling systems.
Projects & Improvements
- Support controls upgrades, equipment retrofits, and automation improvement projects.
- Assist with new equipment installation, startup, and commissioning.
- Troubleshoot industrial networks including EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, and DeviceNet.
- Maintain PLC/HMI backups, electrical drawings, and controls documentation.
- Work closely with Maintenance, Engineering, Production, OEMs, and system integrators.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of industrial controls or automation experience preferred.
- Hands-on Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLC programming and troubleshooting experience.
- Experience with Studio 5000/RSLogix, ladder logic, HMIs, and VFDs.
- Ability to read electrical schematics and troubleshoot automated manufacturing equipment.
- Experience with ControlLogix, CompactLogix, FactoryTalk, PanelView, PowerFlex, servo systems, and commissioning is a plus.
Working Conditions
- Approximately 50% office/project work and 50% production-floor support.
- Monday–Friday, approximately 7:00 AM–4:00 PM, with little to no routine overtime.
- Industrial manufacturing environment requiring appropriate PPE.
- Occasional support of the company’s West Virginia operation may be required.
