Before the first beam hits a saw or a weld table, you’re already safeguarding quality. Your day begins at receiving, where you cross-check beams, plates, and hardware against purchase orders and Mill Test Reports (MTRs) to confirm size, grade, and quantity. Then you move to the heart of the shop, verifying that fabricated steel precisely matches shop drawings and CAD intent.
Day-in-the-life
- Incoming verification: Match raw materials (beams, plates, hardware) to purchase orders and MTRs, validating dimensions, steel grade, and counts.
- In-process oversight: Audit parts during fabrication for dimensional accuracy and weld quality, preventing defects before they move downstream.
- Final inspections: Confirm finished components conform to shop drawings and design specifications prior to release.
- Blueprint mastery: Read and interpret complex structural blueprints and CAD drawings to ensure each part meets design intent.
- Documentation & traceability: Maintain detailed inspection logs, issue and track non-conformance reports (NCRs), and record shipping clearances.
- Testing & measurement: Use calipers, micrometers, tape measures, and weld gauges; perform thorough visual weld inspections.
- Shipping assurance: Conduct final pre-shipment checks at the loading area to confirm the correct parts are on the right truck and properly secured.
- Real-time collaboration: Partner with the shop foreman and welders to resolve issues quickly and prevent recurrence.
