This role owns moderately complex mechanical engineering work, develops complete and manufacturable design packages, and collaborates across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Production, and Project Management to deliver customer requirements on schedule.
Typical Scope
· Independent ownership of moderately complex components, assemblies, products, or project work
· Multiple design priorities, customer requirements, or configurations managed concurrently
· Responsibility for complete CAD models, drawings, BOMs, design revisions, and production support
· Technical resource for Manufacturing and junior engineering team members
· Accountability for manufacturability, quality, standardization, and cost improvement within assigned work
Key Responsibilities
1. Product Design & Development
· Independently design mechanical components, assemblies, enclosures, and structural features for electrical distribution equipment.
· Develop complete 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs).
· Own assigned product or project design work from requirements through production release.
· Interpret customer specifications and translate requirements into practical mechanical designs.
· Select materials and components based on performance, manufacturability, cost, availability, and application requirements.
2. Engineering & Manufacturing Support
· Serve as a technical resource to Manufacturing, Production, and Quality for assigned products and projects.
· Troubleshoot mechanical design and manufacturing issues and implement sustainable corrective actions.
· Own engineering change requests and design revisions within assigned scope.
· Lead or actively contribute to design reviews, prototype builds, testing, and factory acceptance activities.
· Improve design-for-manufacturing and assembly based on production feedback.
3. Documentation, Standards & Compliance
· Ensure engineering drawings, BOMs, revision records, and supporting documentation are complete and accurate.
· Apply customer requirements, internal design standards, and applicable product requirements.
· Support and improve document control and engineering change processes.
· Develop or review work instructions and assembly documentation when engineering input is required.
· Plan and support validation and verification activities for assigned designs.
4. Project Execution & Coordination
· Plan and coordinate engineering tasks to meet project and production schedules.
· Collaborate with Purchasing and suppliers to resolve technical issues and support component selection.
· Partner with Project Managers and cross-functional teams throughout project execution.
· Identify schedule or technical risks early and develop recovery actions.
· Drive value engineering and cost-reduction opportunities without compromising safety, quality, or performance.
5. Continuous Improvement & Team Support
· Drive improvements in product standardization, manufacturability, engineering cycle time, and design quality.
· Support and mentor Mechanical Engineer I team members on established engineering practices.
· Share technical knowledge across Engineering and Operations.
· Support customer visits, factory acceptance testing, and field-related technical questions when required.
· Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes and reduce recurring design or production issues.
Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
· 3-6 years of mechanical design experience in a manufacturing environment.
· Demonstrated ability to independently complete moderately complex mechanical design work.
· Proficiency with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar CAD software.
· Ability to interpret customer specifications, engineering drawings, BOMs, and manufacturing requirements.
· Strong communication, analytical, project coordination, and problem-solving skills.
· Ability to work in a manufacturing environment and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
Preferred Skills
· Experience with electrical distribution equipment, switchgear, switchboards, modular power systems, or related industrial products.
· Experience in engineered-to-order (ETO) manufacturing.
· Experience with ERP/MRP systems.
· Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and continuous improvement methods.
Level Distinction
Mechanical Engineer II independently owns moderately complex engineering work and is expected to deliver complete, manufacturable designs with less day-to-day technical direction. The role serves as a technical resource to Operations, contributes to standardization and continuous improvement, and supports development of less-experienced engineers.
