Job Title: IndirectUnderwriter

Position Location: Raleigh, NC. Hybrid, must live locally. Two days a week in office.

Job Summary:

The Indirect Underwriter underwrites indirect auto loan applications through sound credit analysis and decision-making in alignment with Coastal's credit policies, procedures, and Fair Lending guidelines, evaluating borrower risk, deal structure, and overall loan viability to support strong portfolio performance and responsible growth. This role collaborates closely with dealer partners, members, sales officers, and internal stakeholders to provide timely decisions, resolve inquiries, and ensure a consistent, efficient, and positive lending experience.

As a key contributor to the Coastal team, your responsibilities will be:

• (40%) Credit Analysis and Underwriting Decisions:
  • Analyze and evaluate indirect auto loan applications, assess borrower and collateral risk, and render sound credit decisions in accordance with established underwriting standards, lending policies, procedures, and Fair Lending requirements.
  • Ensure decisions support portfolio quality, risk tolerance, and organizational goals.

• (20%) Communication and Decision Negotiation:
  • Communicate credit decisions clearly and professionally to members, dealers, and internal partners.
  • Review and communicate credit decision change requests when appropriate, maintaining rapport while protecting the integrity of credit standards and ensuring consistent application of policy.

• (15%) Dealer, Member, and Internal Relationship Management:
  • Build and maintain productive working relationships with members, dealer partners, and internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with sales officers to support market growth, dealer engagement, and the overall success of the indirect lending program.

• (15%) Workflow Management and Competitive Awareness:
  • Manage underwriting workflows to ensure timely decisioning, responsiveness, and accessibility for customers, dealers, and members.
  • Support service-level expectations while maintaining quality, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Stay informed of competitor indirect lending programs, including strengths, weaknesses, and market effectiveness.
  • Gather insights through customer and dealer feedback to make recommendations accordingly.

• (10%) Market Contribution and Profitability Support:
  • Partner with Indirect Relationship Officers to contribute to market profitability through responsible volume generation, efficiency management, and effective dealer management. Balance credit risk with competitive considerations to support sustainable growth.
  • Conduct onsite dealer visits in partnership with Relationship Officers to review underwriting guidelines with dealer staff, ensuring clear understanding of credit expectations, policy requirements, and decisioning standards.

Experience:

• Five years of financial services experience including three years of consumer lending underwriting experience including lending approval or denial authority in Auto Lending
• Indirect Lending experience preferred
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel
• Experience with Meridian Link, Episys and/or Synapsis preferred

Education:

• High School Diploma or equivalent. Related bachelor's degree preferred.
