Position Summary
The Common Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing laboratory testing and analysis that supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a fully integrated pulp and paper mill. The Common Laboratory provides analytical support across the mill, including pulping, bleaching, recovery, utilities, papermaking, wastewater treatment and environmental compliance. TO BE VERIFIED : The work schedule is typically M – F days with rotating ½ day weekends. There is some flexibility in days and times that can be reviewed and discussed on a case-by-case basis.
Job Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate safety as a core value and establish a safe work environment by actively leading the safe execution of work.
- Maintain a clean, clutter-free workspace to help with safety and job efficiency.
- Provide accurate information to be used to help with efficient mill operation.
- Maintain professional relationships and contribute to a positive team environment.
- Work successfully with all employees (hourly and salaried) across all areas of the mill.
- Maintain effective communication with the Technical, Operations, and Environmental departments, especially with abnormal or time-sensitive results or outstanding issues.
- Collect samples from designated mill process locations according to established procedures.
- Ensure samples obtained by others are provided consistently and on schedule.
- Communicate sampling issues or abnormal conditions to the appropriate personnel.
- Perform established test methods for all requested testing.
- Help establish new test methods as needed.
- Ask questions when testing requirements or results are unclear.
- Ensure samples are properly identified, preserved, transported, and analyzed.
- Maintain sample integrity and chain of custody where required.
Laboratory Equipment
- Operate, maintain, clean, and inspect laboratory equipment.
- Perform routine calibration and preventive maintenance as assigned.
- Troubleshoot basic laboratory equipment issues.
- Report equipment failures and arrange appropriate maintenance or service.
- Maintain adequate supplies, reagents, standards, and consumables.
- Monitor chemical and laboratory inventory and communicate replenishment needs.
Process & Operational Support
- Provide timely laboratory information to Operations and mill leadership to support process decisions.
- Support process optimization and continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Assist with trials, process changes, new products, and equipment commissioning when required.
- Work collaboratively with others as needed to investigate abnormal process conditions.
- Participate in troubleshooting and root-cause investigations when laboratory data is required.
- Provide laboratory support during outages, startups, shutdowns, and other critical mill activities.
- Maintain flexibility to respond to changing operational priorities.
