Job Description
The Chassis Component Design & Release Engineer will own the design, development, and release of components for an advanced active suspension system, with a primary focus on struts and springs. As part of the Chassis Actuator Engineering team, this role will coordinate engineering milestones and work with Tier 1 suppliers to deliver components that meet cost, weight, timing, and performance targets.
The position requires experience with strut, spring, and damper development, hydraulic systems, vehicle dynamics, and tuning. Responsibilities will also include requirements and specifications, FMEA documentation, 2D/3D CAD, PLM release documentation, technical specifications, vehicle integration, and testing.
Responsibilities
- Design prototype hardware and electromechanical systems using CATIA V6.
- Develop 2D drawing packages, including GD&T, for component fabrication and assembly.
- Evaluate static, dynamic, structural, and thermal-mechanical performance of mechanical assemblies.
- Lead component testing and characterization, including development of test methods and analysis of resulting data.
- Partner with Tier 1 suppliers to manage component designs, engineering documentation, development activities, and component deliveries.
- Support component requirements, specifications, FMEAs, CAD documentation, PLM releases, and system/component-level technical specifications.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing and Engineering teams on vehicle assembly, integration, bring-up, testing, and operation.
- Work cross-functionally with specialists in AI, Mechatronics, Computer Vision, Robotics, and other engineering disciplines.
- Support vehicle-level integration, development, testing, and suspension tuning activities as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s or PhD is a plus.
- Experience designing and developing struts, air springs, and dampers.
- Experience with vehicle engineering, chassis system design, and component development/release.
- Understanding of pneumatic and/or hydraulic systems, sealing systems, electrical systems, and system architecture.
- Experience with vehicle and component testing and development.
- Proficiency with CATIA V5 or V6 and experience creating 2D engineering drawings using GD&T.
- Knowledge of automotive program development, component release processes, and long-term schedule planning.
- Strong communication skills with engineering teams, management, Manufacturing, and suppliers.
- Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced engineering degree.
- Experience with suspension systems, dampers, vehicle ride dynamics, and tuning.
- Patent awards or patented engineering innovations.
- CAN and vehicle network experience.
- Experience working for an automotive OEM or major Tier 1 supplier.
- Experience with Polarion, Jira, and Confluence.
- Proficiency with Simulink and pneumatic and/or hydraulic system modeling.
