Job Description

The Structural Designer prepares structural engineering and construction drawings for all phases of a project using Autodesk Revit, working under the direct supervision of engineering staff. The role supports the development of design deliverables from initial analysis through detailed documentation, while adhering to established quality management and drafting standards. This position offers the opportunity to grow into CAD/BIM coordination responsibilities, gain field experience through job site visits, and contribute to a strong safety culture in both office and field environments.

Responsibilities

• Prepare structural engineering and construction drawings for all phases of a project utilizing Autodesk Revit software under direct supervision.
• Adhere to the policies and standards defined in the firms quality management system, including internal drafting standards and specific client or industry standards.
• Participate in the CAD/BIM Coordinator Certification program to build advanced skills in digital design and coordination.
• Serve as CAD/BIM Coordinator on selected projects, supporting model coordination and documentation consistency.
• Review vendor drawings and submittals to confirm compliance with Contract Documents and applicable standards.
• Visit job sites to gain field experience, broaden technical background, and develop practical engineering skills.
• Actively contribute to creating and maintaining a strong safety culture in the office and in the field.
• Consistently exercise sound judgment and discretion in the performance of daily job functions.
• Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, aerial photographs, geotechnical data, and other information to support planning of projects of routine to average complexity.
• Create structural design deliverables for review by engineering staff, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
• Perform tasks requiring the application of fundamental engineering concepts and mathematical formulas under direct supervision of engineering staff.
• Perform necessary structural calculations using accepted formulas and references to support design decisions.
• Develop and detail both simple and complex structural design elements, including steel, concrete, and foundation components.
• Collaborate with colleagues and clients through clear communication, contributing to team development and project success.
• Prepare clear and well-structured written reports and documentation to support design work and project communication.

Essential Skills

• Associates or Bachelors degree related to Structural Technology or a closely related discipline.
• Experience using Autodesk Revit for structural design, drafting, and 3D modeling.
• Foundational knowledge of structural or foundation engineering concepts.
• Ability to apply fundamental engineering concepts and mathematical formulas to structural design tasks under supervision.
• Experience or familiarity with structural design and drafting for concrete and steel structures.
• Competence in structural analysis concepts to support the development of design deliverables.
• Experience or familiarity with civil engineering and structural engineering principles as they relate to building and industrial structures.
• Proficiency or working knowledge of CAD tools, including Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD, for 2D and 3D structural modeling.
• Understanding of BIM processes and workflows to support coordinated design and documentation.
• Ability to review and interpret survey reports, maps, drawings, aerial photographs, and geotechnical data.
• Strong communication skills with the confidence to interact directly with colleagues and clients.
• Ability to work independently with direction and support from senior staff while contributing effectively to project teams.
• Strong report writing skills and attention to detail in documentation.
• Demonstrated willingness to grow and learn new market sectors and technical areas.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with structural steel design and detailing for building and industrial structures.
• Familiarity with foundation design and analysis, including shallow and deep foundations.
• Experience in creating and detailing structural components such as beams, columns, slabs, and connections.
• Exposure to industrial structural design projects and related construction practices.
• Experience using BIM tools and workflows to coordinate structural models with other disciplines.
• Ability to develop both simple and complex structural design elements from conceptual layout through detailed documentation.
• Experience reviewing vendor drawings and submittals for compliance with contract requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to apply sound judgment and discretion in technical and project-related decisions.
• Interest in participating in structured certification programs, such as CAD/BIM Coordinator training, to advance professional skills.
• Motivation to actively participate in team development and individual professional growth initiatives.

Work Environment

The role operates in a hybrid work environment that combines office-based and remote work, offering flexibility while supporting collaboration with engineering and design teams. Work involves extensive use of Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and other CAD/BIM tools for structural design, drafting, and 3D modeling. The position includes periodic visits to job sites to gain field experience, observe construction practices, and better understand how design work is implemented in the field. The work setting emphasizes a strong safety culture in both office and field environments, with a focus on safe practices, careful planning, and adherence to established procedures. The environment supports professional development through participation in CAD/BIM certification programs and close collaboration with senior engineering staff.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Syracuse, NY.

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $39.90/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
