Job Description

This full-time Utility Technician role focuses on the safe and efficient operation of critical plant utilities, including industrial HVAC systems, boilers, chillers, osmosis systems, large compressors, and related mechanical and electrical equipment. You will maintain and support the CUB building, which supplies essential power to plant lines, ensuring continuous, reliable operation in a demanding industrial environment.

Responsibilities

• Conduct hourly checks on all equipment within the CUB building to verify safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair industrial HVAC systems, boilers, chillers, osmosis systems, and large compressors.
• Perform mechanical repairs and basic electrical work, including troubleshooting electrical issues as needed.
• Use a root-cause mindset to identify underlying equipment issues and implement long-term corrective solutions.
• Perform preventive maintenance on utilities and facility systems to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation to support installation, maintenance, and repair activities.
• Install and service mechanical components, plumbing connections, and related utility infrastructure.
• Use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively for maintenance, repair, and panel wiring tasks.
• Monitor and adjust chilled water systems, including use of tools such as chilled water system analysis tools (e.g., CWSAT), to maintain proper performance.
• Support facility and building maintenance activities to ensure the CUB and associated systems remain in good working order.
• Ensure all equipment operates safely in a high-heat environment, with fluids reaching temperatures up to 500 degrees.
• Work independently to prioritize tasks, respond to equipment issues, and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
• Perform physically demanding labor, including handling dirty machinery and working in hot, industrial conditions.
• Consistently follow all safety guidelines, procedures, and protocols to protect yourself, coworkers, and equipment.
• Work rotating 12-hour shifts on a 2-2-3 schedule, alternating between day and night shifts every two weeks.

Essential Skills

• Strong mechanical skills with hands-on experience working on industrial HVAC systems, boilers, chillers, osmosis systems, and compressors.
• Ability to perform boiler maintenance, HVAC troubleshooting, and repair of large compressors and related mechanical systems.
• Basic electrical knowledge, including the ability to troubleshoot electrical issues and perform panel wiring tasks safely.
• Experience with facilities maintenance, building maintenance, and facility utilities support.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical documents to guide maintenance and repair work.
• Proficiency using hand tools and power tools safely and effectively in an industrial maintenance setting.
• Demonstrated troubleshooting skills with a root-cause mindset focused on long-term solutions.
• Strong focus on safety and adherence to safety guidelines and protocols in a high-heat, industrial environment.
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage tasks with minimal supervision.
• Comfort working in hot, physically demanding, and dirty environments, including handling high-temperature and heavy equipment.
• Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts on a 2-2-3 schedule, including both day and night shifts.
• Ownership of or ability to obtain steel-toed boots, as they are required for the role.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Prior experience in industrial maintenance, utilities maintenance, or a related mechanical or facilities role is preferred.
• Experience with chilled water systems and use of chilled water system analysis tools (such as CWSAT) is beneficial.
• Background in plumbing, osmosis systems, and installation of mechanical and utility equipment is an advantage.
• Familiarity with facility maintenance practices and building systems in a manufacturing or plant environment.
• Comfort working with high-temperature systems where fluids can reach up to 500 degrees.
• Strong communication skills to report issues, document work, and coordinate with other team members and departments.

This is a Permanent position based out of Decatur, AL.

The pay range for this position is $62400.00 - $62400.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
