Position Summary

The mission of the Engineer IV is to serve as the senior technical and client leader for the Civil Site practice in our Charlotte office - building and maintaining relationships with North Carolina clients, leading the delivery of quality engineering and design documents that are constructable and meet the critical success factors defined for each project, and developing the staff necessary to meet the client needs in the region.

Client Perspective:

This perspective focuses on the individual's relationships with clients. 1. Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, building long-term relationships and trust.
2. Attend client and public meetings – days or nights.
3. Support business development staff to develop projects in North Carolina, including identifying opportunities, attending meetings with existing or prospective clients, and assisting in the development of proposals and statements of qualifications.
4. Represent Three Notch Group in professional and community organizations as needed to strengthen the firm’s presence in the region.

1. Direct and review the use of computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering plans and reports.
2. Assist in managing and observing construction progress in accordance to Contract Documents.
3. Participate in the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) for projects as defined in the Practice’s or Project’s quality control plan.
4. Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
5. Read, analyze, and interpret engineering and construction documents, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
6. Lead the preparation or modification of reports, specifications, plans, construction documents, studies, permits, and designs for various site development or municipal projects.
7. Assist and/or develop opinions or probable construction costs for various projects.
8. Exercise independent judgment and decision making on technical, staffing, and client matters, coordinating with the Practice Leader and/or VP of North Carolina, as appropriate.
9. Recommend alterations to development and design to improve the quality of projects.
10. Prepare and/or review design computations, design documents, and quantity estimates.
11. Rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
12. Follow policies and procedures set forth in the Employee Handbook.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.

1. Prepare or assist with the preparation of project scopes of work, fee estimates, schedules and other deliverables as required by the Project.
2. Communicate effectively with the Project team to ensure that budget and scheduling milestones are being met.
3. Efficiently manage time towards completion of assignments within schedule and budget.
4. Manage complex projects involving special skills and multi-disciplinary teams.
5. Successfully achieve the financial goals set forth for your position (quality work within project budgets, direct labor hours, etc.).

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. • BS degree in civil engineering with 10 or more years of experience.
• 5 or more years of experience serving North Carolina clients (cities, counties, and/or water/sewer boards/authorities).
• Experience in designing and permitting site development projects including site plans, erosion control plans, grading, stormwater and utility design.
• Experience with municipal clients such as flood permitting, H&H modeling, and resiliency design.
• Demonstrated experience managing engineering projects, project teams and client relationships; experience leading an office group or team is preferred.
• Required: Registered Professional Engineer in North Carolina.
• Preferred: Working knowledge of NCDEQ permitting and funding programs and the local government approval processes.
• Preferred: Established relationships with municipal clients in the region and a track record of business development.
• Valid driver’s license.

Skills:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Basic level of computer-aided design using AutoCAD, Civil3D, and stormwater modeling software.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Seeing, hearing, talking, standing, stooping, bending, walking, reading, and writing.
• Reaching with hands and arms.
• Ability to lift 25 lbs. or more.
• Ability to work extended hours at times.

Environment:

• Predominantly office environment; regular local travel to client and project sites as well as some overnight travel is required.
• The noise level in the office work environment is usually moderate.
• Occasionally works in outside weather conditions, possibly for extended assignments.
• The noise level on the construction site is often loud.
