Job Description

Seeking a motivated Structural Design Engineer with 4+ years of professional experience to join a growing, collaborative engineering team. In this role, you will perform structural design and analysis for a wide variety of projects, contribute to calculations and documentation, and support efforts from early concept development through construction administration. Responsibilities

• Perform structural design and analysis for a broad range of projects, including commercial buildings, educational facilities, mixed-use developments, transportation structures, seismic retrofits, industrial facilities, and specialty structures.
• Develop and review structural calculations for steel, concrete, timber/wood, and masonry structures to ensure safety, code compliance, and constructability.
• Prepare, modify, and coordinate structural drawings and details using Revit and AutoCAD in collaboration with architects and other engineering disciplines.
• Apply structural engineering principles and stress analysis methods to design efficient and economical structural systems.
• Interpret and implement relevant building codes and design standards, including IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI, NDS, and other applicable guidelines.
• Participate in project coordination meetings with multidisciplinary teams to align structural solutions with architectural and MEP requirements.
• Support projects throughout their lifecycle, from conceptual design and preliminary studies through construction documents and construction administration.
• Collaborate with team members to resolve engineering challenges, provide technical input, and contribute to innovative design solutions.
• Contribute to fast-paced project workflows, managing multiple assignments and meeting deadlines on a high volume of projects each year.
• Engage in weekly learning lunches and other knowledge-sharing activities, both teaching and learning from colleagues to continuously enhance technical skills.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with internal teams and external stakeholders through written reports, calculations, and verbal discussions.
• Demonstrate a strong commitment to quality, accuracy, and attention to detail in all engineering deliverables.
• Work effectively in a hybrid environment, coordinating tasks and maintaining productivity both in the office and on designated work-from-home days.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis.
• Minimum of 4+ years of structural engineering experience.
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
• Actively working toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or recently licensed as a PE.
• Hands-on experience designing structures utilizing steel, concrete, timber/wood, and masonry.
• Proficiency in structural analysis and structural design, including stress analysis and structural calculations.
• Experience with structural steel and wood structure design.
• Ability to use Revit and AutoCAD for structural modeling and drafting.
• Strong understanding of structural engineering principles and practices.
• Familiarity with IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, ACI, NDS, and other applicable design standards and codes.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Work Environment

The role is based in a well-established structural engineering practice that has operated in the Portland area for over 40 years and is licensed in 45 states. The team includes more than two dozen engineers, several of whom are partners, and works on approximately 1,500–2,000 projects per year ranging from retaining walls to new multifamily developments. The office environment is professional, collaborative, and fast-paced, with a beautiful workspace near Washington Square Mall. Engineers use modern tools and technologies such as Revit and AutoCAD, along with industry-standard codes and design references, to deliver high-quality structural solutions. The culture emphasizes teamwork, a love of learning, and mutual respect, with regular team outings, four employee events per year, and weekly learning lunches where staff solve engineering problems and share knowledge. Hybrid work options are available: engineers with 2+ years of experience may work from home one day per week, and licensed PEs may work from home two days per week, with employees choosing their permanent remote days. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tigard, OR.

The pay range for this position is $85.00 - $100000.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
