Automotive Service Writer/Estimator

Norfolk, VA | $25–$28/hr + OT | Mon–Fri | No Weekends

If you’re a former or current mechanic who knows how cars actually work, how to find the right parts, and how to build a solid estimate, this could be a great fit.

This is an internal Service Writer/Estimator role with zero customer-facing work. No selling, no upselling, no chasing approvals. You’ll be working with the techs, parts suppliers and outside vendors to figure out what a car needs and get it handled.

Think of it as half shop, half desk using your mechanical experience without spending all day turning wrenches.

THE JOB

• Review inspections and technician findings and build repair estimates/work orders
• Research parts using catalogs, diagrams and supplier sites
• Track down used, discontinued and hard-to-find parts
• Figure out fitment, interchange and application issues
• Work with diagnostic techs when they run into something unusual or complicated
• Get quotes and coordinate outside repairs, specialty work and inspections
• Help delegate work and keep vehicles moving through reconditioning
• Jump under a car or into the shop when you need to see something for yourself
• Keep estimates, parts research and vendor information organized

The operation reconditions 700–800 vehicles a year, so there is always something moving through the pipeline. The focus is on fixing the problem and getting the car done, not generating revenue.

You’ll need:

• 5+ years of hands-on automotive experience
• 2–3+ years in a Service Writer, Estimator or similar role
• Strong mechanical and parts knowledge
• Experience building repair estimates and sourcing parts
• Ability to read parts diagrams and work through fitment/interchange issues
• Experience finding used, discontinued or hard-to-source parts
• Good computer skills and comfort working with online catalogs
• Someone who can talk shop with diagnostic techs and knows when to dig deeper

You don't need to be a salesman. You need to know cars and know how to figure things out.

PAY & SCHEDULE

• $25–$28/hr, based on experience
• Time-and-a-half after 40 hours
• 45 paid hours per week, including paid lunch
• Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM
• No weekends
• Paid holidays and paid vacation
