Overview

MedQuest Imaging is seeking an experienced Senior HL7 / Healthcare Interoperability Engineer to support critical interoperability initiatives across its growing nationwide imaging network. This role will focus on the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of healthcare interfaces across radiology, revenue cycle, dictation, PACS, and third-party systems.

The ideal candidate combines deep healthcare integration expertise with strong software engineering capabilities, including cloud-based middleware, infrastructure-as-code practices, interface development, and workflow optimization. This individual must be comfortable working in fast-paced implementation environments where requirements evolve alongside delivery and where direct collaboration with clinical, operational, vendor, and technical stakeholders is required.

This position will play a key role in supporting multiple concurrent system implementations and integrations involving RIS, PACS, dictation, revenue cycle, and external radiology partners.

Please know this is a contract position scheduled for 6-12 months.



Responsibilities

Healthcare Interface Engineering
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support HL7 interfaces and healthcare interoperability solutions.
  • Build and maintain system-to-system integrations across clinical, operational, and financial platforms.
  • Configure and manage message transformations, routing logic, and workflow orchestration within interface engines.
  • Develop and support integrations utilizing HL7 v2.x messaging standards, REST APIs, web services, and SQL-based data integrations.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, identify root causes, and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Develop monitoring, alerting, error-handling, and recovery processes for critical integrations.
  • Create and maintain interface documentation, workflow diagrams, technical specifications, and support materials.
Software Development & Automation
  • Develop integration components and automation tools using:
    • JavaScript
    • Python
    • Java
    • SQL
    • RESTful APIs
  • Design and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) configurations using Terraform.
  • Manage subscription-based integrations and deployment components through code-driven configurations.
  • Apply software engineering best practices, including:
    • Source control management
    • Git workflows
    • Branching strategies
    • Code reviews
    • CI/CD methodologies
  • Participate in architecture discussions and contribute to scalable, maintainable integration designs.
Interoperability & Workflow Optimization
  • Support implementation and stabilization efforts during system conversions and center go-lives.
  • Collaborate with business, clinical, and technical stakeholders to define workflows, triggers, business rules, and data requirements.
  • Analyze existing workflows and identify opportunities for automation, optimization, and standardization.
  • Support outbound integrations with external radiology reading groups, teleradiology partners, coding vendors, and statement vendors.
  • Ensure reliable order routing, result delivery, report distribution, and prior-study exchange processes.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work directly with vendors, implementation teams, operations leaders, and clinical stakeholders.
  • Gather requirements through interviews and workflow analysis when formal specifications are incomplete or evolving.
  • Communicate technical concepts effectively to non-technical audiences.
  • Manage multiple concurrent implementation workstreams while meeting project milestones and deadlines.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in healthcare interoperability, interface development, or healthcare systems integration.
  • Strong hands-on experience with HL7 interface engines and healthcare messaging workflows.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating healthcare applications across:
    • RIS
    • PACS/VNA
    • Dictation platforms
    • Revenue cycle systems
  • Strong programming experience with JavaScript, Python, Java, and SQL.
  • Experience designing and implementing REST/API integrations.
  • Experience utilizing Terraform or similar infrastructure automation technologies.
  • Working knowledge of software development lifecycle (SDLC) methodologies.
  • Experience with source control systems, branching strategies, and collaborative development practices.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written documentation and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple competing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Radiology or medical imaging industry experience.
  • Experience with AbbaDox RIS.
  • Experience with Candid revenue cycle integrations.
  • Experience supporting PACS, VNA, and imaging workflows.
  • AWS experience, including:
    • Fargate
    • Networking
    • Security Groups
    • Cloud architecture concepts
  • Azure DevOps experience.
  • Experience working with teleradiology providers and external reading groups.
  • Familiarity with healthcare claims, coding, billing, and revenue cycle data flows.
