Educational Sign Language Interpreter - Chicago, IL

Step into a rewarding contract opportunity supporting students in a vibrant junior high environment near Chicago, IL. This position plays an essential role in a satellite program, providing sign language interpretation for students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) in grades 5-8. You will be the bridge to ensure full access to learning and interaction, whether accompanying students to mainstream classes or facilitating communication during related services like OT and social work.

Your day will run from 8:15 am to 3:00 pm, aligning with a typical school schedule, allowing for work-life balance and time for personal pursuits.

Qualifications & Desired Experience:

• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
• Experience interpreting in educational settings, particularly with students in grades 5-8
• Familiarity with both mainstream and DHH classroom environments
• Ability to collaborate respectfully with teachers, support staff, and related service providers
• Flexibility, adaptability, and a commitment to fostering inclusivity

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide clear, accurate ASL interpretation for students in a DHH classroom as well as in mainstream general education settings
• Accompany students throughout their school day, including during related service minutes (such as occupational therapy and social work)
• Support students’ communication needs, ensuring they have equal access to instruction and classroom interaction
• Facilitate positive connections between DHH students and their teachers, classmates, and service providers
