Direct Counsel is seeking a Technical Advisor to join a leading Am Law 100 firm with more than 500 attorneys serving clients worldwide. The firm provides sophisticated legal counsel to businesses, entrepreneurs, investors, and other clients across a range of industries and practice areas, including intellectual property.

The firm is seeking a Technical Advisor with a background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field to join its Intellectual Property – Patent Prosecution team in Boston or Washington, DC. Technical Advisors collaborate with attorneys, team members, and clients to understand complex technologies and develop and execute strategies to protect those technologies.

The Technical Advisor will be involved in patent drafting and prosecution, freedom-to-operate studies, and patent analysis designed to help clients clear products for market and build strong IP portfolios.

• Assess scientific literature, patents, and patent application documents involving mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and related technologies

• Understand, critique, and provide insightful analysis of scientific data relating to inventions

• Conduct comprehensive searches of scientific articles, patents, and patent applications relevant to inventions

• Perform in-depth analyses comparing inventions with existing discoveries and technologies

• Identify essential elements, features, and components of inventions

• Draft patent applications, including descriptions of inventions and clearly defined claims

• Draft responses to patent application rejections issued by the USPTO and other worldwide patent offices

• Analyze scientific and patent references cited in rejections and develop persuasive arguments distinguishing the invention from cited references

• Conduct clearance and freedom-to-operate studies to evaluate clients’ products in relation to competitor patents

• Present technical concepts, analysis, reasoning, and conclusions clearly and concisely to colleagues and clients

• Collaborate with attorneys, technical professionals, and clients throughout the patent prosecution process

• Work with clients on innovative and cutting-edge technologies to obtain patent protection and develop IP portfolios

• Degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field

• Ability to present scientific and technical concepts, analysis, reasoning, and conclusions effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

• Ability to prioritize competing responsibilities and meet deadlines

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

• Ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment

The position is available in Boston, MA or Washington, DC. The firm follows a hybrid work model, with employees expected to work from the office approximately 60% of the time in accordance with firm guidelines.

Salary: $100,000–$140,000, plus bonus eligibility and comprehensive benefits.
