Job Title: Mechanical Piping Designer

Job Description

The Mechanical Designer – P&ID Developer is responsible for creating, updating, and maintaining accurate Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) that support safe and efficient industrial operations. This role works closely with mechanical and process engineering teams to document system layouts, fluid flow, instrumentation, and control logic across complex industrial processes. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and experience supporting both design and as-built documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, update, and maintain Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) using industry-standard tools such as AutoCAD or AutoCAD P&ID.
  • Accurately represent piping systems, equipment, instrumentation, control loops, and process flow in accordance with project and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers, process engineers, and cross-functional stakeholders to gather requirements and ensure design intent is captured correctly.
  • Produce clear, detailed P&ID documentation including equipment symbols, pipe specifications, instrumentation details, and control logic.
  • Ensure P&IDs comply with applicable safety regulations, industry codes, standards, and project-specific requirements.
  • Support component selection efforts by coordinating with engineers on piping materials, valves, instruments, and associated equipment.
  • Manage P&ID change control by documenting revisions, tracking updates, and communicating changes to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Perform quality control reviews to validate accuracy, completeness, and consistency of P&IDs with project scope and safety guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain as-built P&IDs reflecting actual system configurations following construction or field modifications.
  • Clearly communicate design concepts, changes, and technical details to team members and project stakeholders.
  • Provide guidance, training, and technical support to junior designers and drafters as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Mechanical design experience with a focus on P&ID development for industrial or manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency with P&ID development software such as AutoCAD or AutoCAD P&ID.
  • In-depth understanding of industrial processes, equipment, piping systems, and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, industry standards, and best practices related to P&ID development.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with high attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to producing accurate, high-quality engineering documentation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or a related field.
  • 5–10 years of mechanical design experience with a strong focus on P&ID development.
  • Experience in CAD development within power generation, power delivery, piping design, or similar heavy industrial settings.
  • Experience with designing and modifying P&IDs.
  • Experience with reviewing mechanical drawings and performing quality control of drawings including P&IDs.
  • 2-3 years of experience utilizing AutoCAD, with experience in AutoCAD Plant 3D preferred.

Work Environment

The work is performed onsite at a power plant in Rincon, GA. This role involves working daily with a team to achieve project deliverables.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Rincon, GA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $55.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
