Job Description

Job Description

The GOR Group is supporting a general contractor client in the search for a Field Infrastructure Engineer in Chicago.

This individual will support a complex modernization project within an active data center as the facility transitions from traditional cooling to liquid-cooled technology. The scope includes the migration of copper infrastructure to fiber, equipment installation and integration, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and field coordination.

This is a field-based support position for someone who understands data center equipment and fiber infrastructure and is comfortable working directly where the installation is taking place.

Position Summary

The Field Infrastructure Engineer will provide on-site technical and coordination support throughout the installation, testing, and turnover of upgraded data center infrastructure.

Working alongside the project team, technicians, trade partners, vendors, and client representatives, this individual will help verify installations, document progress, troubleshoot technical issues, and keep field activities moving.

The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience with fiber infrastructure, network deployments, equipment installation, migrations, or data center operations within a live mission-critical environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work directly with technicians, trade partners, vendors, and project team members.
  • Monitor field progress and communicate installation updates, issues, and constraints.
  • Assist with site access, equipment coordination, material tracking, and installation sequencing.
  • Participate in field walks, coordination meetings, and project progress discussions.
  • Help resolve technical and logistical issues that could affect installation activities.

Fiber and Infrastructure Installation

  • Support the removal, replacement, migration, and testing of copper and fiber infrastructure.
  • Assist with fiber installation, termination, labeling, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation.
  • Support rack-and-stack activities, cable management, equipment connections, cross-connects, and network migrations.
  • Verify that installations align with project drawings, specifications, and client requirements.
  • Support equipment installation, relocation, integration, startup, and turnover activities.

Active Data Center Operations

  • Support infrastructure activities within an operational data center.
  • Help coordinate work around active equipment, critical systems, and ongoing facility operations.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of shutdowns, cutovers, migrations, and other critical activities.
  • Identify field conditions that could create risks to existing systems and communicate concerns to the project team.
  • Follow all site access, security, change-management, safety, and operational procedures.

Testing and Troubleshooting

  • Support fiber testing, circuit validation, signal verification, and troubleshooting.
  • Assist with identifying fiber breaks, connection mismatches, faulty components, and installation deficiencies.
  • Help coordinate corrective actions with technicians, vendors, and project stakeholders.
  • Verify that testing results and completed repairs are properly documented.
  • Support commissioning, inspections, punch-list completion, and final turnover.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate field reports, testing records, equipment information, and installation documentation.
  • Update issue logs, punch lists, cable schedules, rack elevations, and project tracking tools.
  • Document field conditions, completed work, testing results, and outstanding items.
  • Collect closeout information and support the preparation of final turnover documentation.
  • Communicate progress and technical issues clearly to the project team.

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in engineering, telecommunications, electronics, information technology, construction management, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Equivalent field, trade, military, or technical experience will also be considered.
  • Professional engineering licensure is not required.

Experience

  • 3+ years of experience supporting data center, fiber, telecommunications, network deployment, or other critical infrastructure projects.
  • Hands-on experience with fiber-optic installation, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, or migration.
  • Experience working within operational data centers, colocation facilities, telecommunications facilities, or similarly critical environments.
  • Experience supporting technicians, contractors, vendors, or project teams in the field.
  • Experience with live infrastructure upgrades, equipment migrations, or network cutovers preferred.

  • Familiarity with data center equipment and supporting infrastructure.
  • Exposure to liquid-cooled or high-density data center environments is preferred but not required.
  • Understanding of field safety, quality control, testing, documentation, and turnover requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project or field-reporting platforms.

Professional Attributes

  • Comfortable working in an active, field-based environment.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Clear and professional communication with project teams, technicians, vendors, and client representatives.
