Job Title: Project Engineer

Job Description

The Project Engineer will lead the development of detailed site civil design packages for industrial projects, with a strong focus on natural gas pipeline facilities. This role involves managing and supporting multiple projects at once, coordinating closely with civil design and other engineering disciplines, and serving as a key technical resource throughout the project lifecycle. The engineer will play an important role in client correspondence, permitting activities, and participation in planning commission meetings, while also having opportunities to grow project management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive site civil design packages for industrial projects, with an emphasis on natural gas pipeline facilities.
  • Support and manage multiple projects concurrently, ensuring quality, accuracy, and adherence to project schedules.
  • Identify required local and state permits for site design and lead the application process for approvals.
  • Prepare and submit permit and review applications, including site plan review, zoning permits, engineering approvals, stormwater reviews, drain permits, soil erosion and sedimentation control (SESC) permits, building permits, and right-of-way (ROW) permits.
  • Perform detailed civil engineering calculations, including stormwater routing and detention/retention design.
  • Seal civil engineering calculations and drawing packages in accordance with professional licensure requirements.
  • Conduct QA/QC checks on civil calculations and design deliverables to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with standards.
  • Collaborate closely with the civil design team and other engineering disciplines to maintain coordination and integration across all project elements.
  • Communicate effectively with authorities having jurisdiction and represent projects at planning commission and similar regulatory meetings.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for clients throughout the project lifecycle, providing technical guidance and updates.
  • Correspond with clients to clarify project requirements, discuss design options, and support decision-making.
  • Contribute to project coordination efforts, ensuring design activities align with overall project goals and timelines.
  • Further develop project management skills by participating in scheduling, coordination, and progress tracking activities.
  • Apply civil engineering principles to land development, site development, and drainage design for industrial sites.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
  • At least 5 years of experience in civil engineering, site development, or related project engineering roles.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D for civil design and drafting.
  • Strong experience in civil design, land development, and site development for industrial or similar projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform stormwater and drainage calculations, including routing and detention/retention design.
  • Experience with project engineering and project coordination in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Ability to seal civil calculations and drawing packages in accordance with professional standards.
  • Experience conducting QA/QC reviews on engineering calculations and design deliverables.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with regulatory authorities and present at planning commission or similar public meetings.
  • Strong design skills using AutoCAD and Civil 3D, with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage and support multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality and schedule.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience using MicroStation for civil or infrastructure design is preferred.
  • Stormwater management, drainage design, and related engineering approvals.
  • Experience working on industrial projects, particularly involving natural gas pipeline facilities, is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration with clients and internal teams.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a civil design team and coordinate with other engineering disciplines.
  • Interest in developing and expanding project management capabilities over time.
  • Familiarity with local and state permitting processes related to site development and land use.

Work Environment

This position is based on-site in a downtown office in Muskegon, Michigan, within a close-knit team of approximately 15 employees. The work environment is office-based, with a focus on collaborative design and coordination among civil and other engineering disciplines. The role primarily involves using AutoCAD Civil 3D and other design tools in a professional setting, participating in meetings with clients and regulatory authorities, and engaging in coordinated project work across a variety of projects in West Michigan.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Muskegon, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $90000.00 - $110000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
