Mechanical Design Engineer

• Design of robust and cost-effective automation solutions (pick and place, processing, feeding, machine tending, inspection, assembly, etc)

• Generate accurate BOMs, 2D shop drawings

• Consulting with assembly for instructions, techniques, and guidance

• Customer site visits (New England) for project review, information gathering, and installation support.

• Keep accurate records of project information, time, and tasks details

• Maintain professionalism and tactful communication when interacting with coworkers, vendors, and customers

Education

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Automation Engineering, or a related field preferred or years of mechanical design experience, preferably in industrial automation, machine design, robotics, or custom equipment.

• Experience designing custom machinery or automated equipment strongly preferred.

• Experience working in a machine-building or manufacturing environment preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software; experience with Autodesk Fusion preferred.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, including:
    • Machine structures and frames
    • Pneumatics
    • Linear motion
    • Bearings and power transmission
    • Motors and gearboxes
    • Conveyors
    • Grippers and end-of-arm tooling
    • Fasteners and hardware
    • Machine guarding
    • Tolerance and Fit
  • Ability to create accurate 3D models, assemblies, BOMs, and detailed 2D manufacturing drawings.
  • Understanding of GD&T and engineering drawing standards.
  • Ability to select appropriate mechanical components based on load, speed, accuracy, dutycycle, and operating environment.
  • Familiarity with common industrial automation components and manufacturers.
  • Understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Ability to design with consideration for machining, fabrication, welding, assembly,installation, and serviceability.
  • Experience designing components for CNC machining, laser cutting, bending, and/orother common manufacturing processes.
