Mechanical Project Engineer

J.Riley Recruitment

Job Description

Job Description
Mechanical Project Engineer Position Overview

Our client is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer to support the design and execution of engineered mechanical systems for power generation applications. This position will contribute throughout the project lifecycle, including proposal development, detailed engineering, equipment selection, fabrication support, technical documentation, cost and schedule coordination, system testing, field installation, commissioning, and startup. The role works closely with Project Management, Sales, customers, vendors, and internal technical teams while providing engineering support from initial concept through field execution.

The ideal candidate brings practical mechanical engineering experience within power generation, turbomachinery, or a comparable industrial equipment environment. Strong candidates will understand mechanical and fluid systems, equipment integration, fabrication requirements, and the technical documentation used to execute engineered projects. This position is particularly well suited to an engineer who enjoys combining detailed engineering with hands-on project execution and seeing designed systems through fabrication, testing, and commissioning.

Why Join Our Client?

Our client is an established engineering and technical services organization serving the power generation market. The company provides engineered equipment and technical solutions for complex industrial applications, creating an environment where engineering personnel work closely with project execution and field operations rather than functioning solely within a traditional design group.

The Mechanical Project Engineer will have meaningful ownership across multiple phases of engineering and project delivery. The position provides exposure to customer requirements, equipment design and integration, fabrication activities, testing, and operating systems in the field. For an engineer seeking broader technical responsibility, the role offers the ability to apply engineering knowledge to both design and real-world execution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop mechanical and fluid system designs, equipment arrangements, piping layouts, installation details, and supporting engineering documentation for power generation projects.
  • Perform application engineering and technical calculations to support the specification and selection of mechanical equipment, components, and instrumentation.
  • Create and review engineering and fabrication drawings while verifying that designs satisfy project specifications and contractual requirements.
  • Develop bills of materials, equipment specifications, procurement documentation, and technical packages required for fabrication and project execution.
  • Coordinate with Project Management on engineering deliverables, schedules, project status, technical issues, budgets, and cost performance.
  • Provide engineering support during fabrication and testing, resolving technical issues and helping validate system performance prior to field deployment.
  • Coordinate technical matters with customers, vendors, and internal project teams throughout design and execution.
  • Support field installation, commissioning, and startup activities while contributing to improvements in engineering processes and system designs.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated mechanical engineering experience involving engineered equipment, mechanical systems, piping, fluid systems, or comparable industrial applications.
  • Experience with mechanical design, equipment specification, component selection, and preparation or review of engineering and fabrication documentation.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical and auxiliary systems associated with power generation equipment or comparable rotating equipment applications.
  • Experience using computer-aided design tools to develop or review mechanical, piping, structural, or fabrication drawings.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, process documentation, schematics, and other technical documentation used for equipment design and project execution.
  • Working knowledge of applicable industrial engineering, fabrication, and safety codes and standards.
  • Experience supporting fabrication, equipment installation, system testing, commissioning, or startup activities.
  • Ability to travel periodically to support project, customer, and field requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution; candidates with an associate degree or relevant military technical training combined with applicable experience may also be considered.
  • Experience supporting gas turbine, generator, or related power generation equipment and auxiliary systems.
  • Experience developing technical documentation and equipment data required for procurement, fabrication, testing, or installation.
