Staff Geotechnical Engineer or Geologist

We are seeking an entry-level geotechnical engineer or geologist to support our growing geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing practice in our Lynchburg office. This position is well suited for a recent engineering or geology graduate interested in gaining practical experience in subsurface investigations, geotechnical evaluations, construction observation, laboratory testing, and construction materials testing.

The selected candidate will work alongside experienced engineers, geologists, laboratory personnel, and field technicians on commercial, institutional, industrial, transportation, utility, and energy projects. The position combines field and office responsibilities and provides opportunities for professional growth and advancement toward professional engineering or professional geologist licensure, as applicable.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct subsurface investigations in the field alongside the drill team, including observing and carefully logging soil samples and rock core specimens, preparing accurate field boring logs, noting important observations, and collecting groundwater level measurements.
• Conduct laboratory soils testing.
• Assist with geotechnical calculations and evaluations involving shallow and deep foundations, settlement, earthwork, retaining walls, slopes, seismic site class, and pavement systems.
• Prepare draft geotechnical engineering reports under the guidance of experienced professionals.
• Perform construction materials testing and observation involving soils, aggregate, concrete, asphalt, masonry, and related construction materials.
• Evaluate subgrades, footings, foundations, and structural fill conditions during construction.
• Review laboratory and field-testing results for accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
• Prepare daily field reports and construction observation documentation.
• Communicate findings promptly and professionally to project managers and contractors.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, geological engineering, or geology.
• A minimum of 0-3 years of relevant experience.
• Engineer-in-Training designation for engineering candidates, or eligibility and commitment to obtain the designation within a reasonable period after employment.
• Interest in pursuing professional engineering or professional geologist licensure, as applicable.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to prepare organized, accurate, and professional technical reports.
• Willingness to perform both field and office assignments.
• Ability to work outdoors at active construction sites and in varying weather conditions.
• Willingness and ability to travel to project sites; some out-of-town work will be required.
• Valid driver's license in good standing with a minimum of three (3) years of licensed driving experience.
• Ability to safely lift and carry field-testing equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
• Willingness and ability to work overtime, including occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends, as project schedules require.

Preferred Qualifications

• Coursework or experience in geology, engineering geology, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, foundation engineering, hydrogeology, or construction materials.
• Previous internship, drilling, field-mapping, laboratory, construction inspection, or materials testing experience.
• Familiarity with soil and rock classification procedures.
• Familiarity with reading and interpreting civil site plans, structural drawings, and project specifications.
• Familiarity with ASTM, AASHTO, VDOT, or related testing standards.
• Current certification or documented training in one or more of the following: ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I; VDOT Soils and Aggregate Compaction; VDOT Asphalt Field Level II; nuclear moisture-density gauge operation and radiation safety; or applicable USDOT hazardous materials (HAZMAT) transportation requirements.
• Familiarity with geotechnical engineering software such as gINT, LPILE, MFAD, SHAFT, APILE, or Slide.
• Familiarity with the geology and construction practices of Virginia’s Piedmont, Blue Ridge, and Valley and Ridge regions.
• Previous experience performing geotechnical evaluations, engineering calculations, and preparing draft geotechnical reports

What This Position Offers

This position offers meaningful, hands-on involvement throughout the geotechnical project lifecycle from initial site reconnaissance and subsurface exploration through laboratory testing, engineering and geological evaluation, technical reporting, and construction-phase services. Direct observation and careful logging of soil and rock behind the drill rig, together with construction materials testing and other field experience, will provide the essential technical foundation for increasing professional responsibility. Working alongside experienced professionals, the successful candidate will receive training and mentorship while developing the technical judgment, practical experience, and communication skills needed to become a confident, well-rounded geotechnical professional.

As the candidate demonstrates competency and gains experience, responsibilities may expand to include greater ownership of geotechnical or geological evaluations, engineering analyses and calculations, technical report preparation, subsurface investigation planning, field coordination, client communication, and oversight of field personnel. Long-term career opportunities may include technical leadership, project coordination, and project management. Advancement will be based on demonstrated performance, technical development, professional initiative, progress toward applicable certification or licensure, and readiness to assume greater responsibility.

Estimated Base Pay Range: $60,000 - $80,000 Annual Salary.

How We Determine Pay: Final compensation within this range is determined in good faith and is based on objective factors. These include the candidate’s specialized skills, level of experience, geographic location, and specific educational background or certifications.

Additional Compensation: This position will be eligible for 401(k) matching and ownership through our ESOP and may also be eligible for incentive pay subject to company performance and performance-based raises.
