Job Title: Mechanical EngineerJob DescriptionThis Mechanical Engineer role focuses on the design and documentation of mechanical components, assemblies, and related tooling for customer products, ensuring that all solutions support both customer requirements and internal manufacturing needs. You will develop and maintain engineering drawings, perform mechanical computations, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and vendors to deliver robust, manufacturable designs. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to new product development, sustaining engineering, and continuous improvement initiatives while working with advanced mechanical design tools and methods.
Responsibilities- Design mechanical components, assemblies, and related tooling that meet customer specifications and internal manufacturing requirements.
- Develop basic and intermediate drawings of components and assemblies, ensuring clarity, completeness, and compliance with standards.
- Perform engineering computations and write or edit technical specifications to support design intent and manufacturing processes.
- Create modified basic designs for new or existing products and tooling to improve performance, manufacturability, or cost.
- Verify completed work by checking dimensions, materials, and quantities in accordance with the verification plan.
- Interact with vendors to ensure proper fabrication of mechanical components for products, test equipment, and tooling.
- Create and maintain engineering drawings, models, and documentation throughout the product lifecycle.
- Assist with the assembly of tooling, test fixtures, and prototypes, providing mechanical expertise and support to build activities.
- Perform basic to complex drafting and design duties, including tolerance analysis, material selection, and selection of fabrication methods.
- Provide mechanical design support to Hardware Design, Software Design, PCB Design, Functional Test, and ICT Test teams for product, test, and tooling development.
- Contact and collaborate with hardware, software, and equipment vendors to support mechanical design and integration.
- Follow established project plans, meet milestones, and report project status and issues to leadership in a timely manner.
- Assist in preparing project proposals and associated cost estimates, contributing mechanical design input and effort estimates.
- Support Design for Excellence (DFX) reviews and create the necessary documentation to capture design decisions and recommendations.
- Develop an understanding of Design for Excellence philosophy and promote its application with customers and internal teams.
- Communicate with customer technical personnel regarding basic technical issues and design considerations.
- Identify and communicate technical challenges and collaborate with leadership to create and implement effective solutions.
- Work directly with customers to understand requirements related to mechanical design, packaging, and integration.
- Collaborate with Sustaining Engineering teams in product, process, test, and quality to develop products that leverage internal manufacturing and test processes.
- Assist in the development of advanced and new mechanical technologies, contributing to innovation and capability growth.
- Participate in research for new design methods and tools, evaluating and recommending improvements to current practices.
- Assist in coordinating mechanical engineering strategies for key customers, ensuring alignment with technical and business objectives.
- Participate in continuous improvement activities, prepare complete documentation, and present findings and results in a team review format.
Essential Skills- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technical discipline, with a preference for a Mechanical Engineering degree or Physics degree.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience designing 19-inch racking and server mechanical systems.
- Strong experience in mechanical design, including component and assembly design for electronic packaging applications.
- Proficiency in 3D modeling and CAD tools for mechanical design and documentation.
- Hands-on experience with sheet metal design for mechanical structures and enclosures.
- Experience with plastic injection molding design for mechanical components and housings.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D modeling and mechanical design tasks.
- Experience using Product Data Management (PDM) systems to manage engineering data and revisions.
- Knowledge of mechanical tolerance analysis and its application to complex assemblies.
- Ability to perform material selection and choose appropriate fabrication methods for mechanical components.
- Experience in tooling and fixture design to support manufacturing and testing processes.
- Familiarity with mechatronics concepts and integration of mechanical designs with electronic and control systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, vendors, and customer technical personnel.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Experience in electronic packaging design, including server and rack-mounted equipment.
- Background in Mechanical Engineering or Physics that supports strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Exposure to Design for Excellence (DFX) principles, including design for manufacturability, test, reliability, and cost.
- Experience supporting hardware, software, PCB, and test engineering teams in product and tooling development.
- Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies and presenting improvement results to teams.
- Ability to support project proposals by contributing technical input and cost estimates.
- Comfort working with external vendors for component fabrication and equipment sourcing.
- Interest in researching and adopting new design methods, tools, and technologies.
Work EnvironmentYou will work in a collaborative, cross-functional environment alongside engineers, technicians, and designers, contributing to both new product development and sustaining engineering projects. The role involves regular interaction with internal teams and external vendors, as well as customer technical personnel, to ensure that mechanical designs meet functional, manufacturing, and quality expectations. The position may be based in engineering facilities located in Arden Hills, Winona, or Rochester, with access to modern CAD tools, PDM systems, and prototyping and test equipment. The environment emphasizes teamwork, continuous improvement, and the use of structured project plans and reviews to deliver high-quality mechanical solutions.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of ROCHESTER, MN.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $45.00 - $65.00/hr.
